wmv and asf reading problems

I do not know what happened but suddenly i cannot load wmv files or asf files, tmp says that it cannot open it or that they are unsupported, i moved in the VFAPI plug-in list the Directshow to nr 2, but it doesn't help, am i doing something wrong, it used to work...

TemplateAVS 02-24-2005 03:18 PM

It could be a codec issue, check your codecs. Or the audio your wmv, asf files are using. Or those wmv or asf have that security thing that you need to view them.

madmega 04-05-2005 04:30 PM

i still cannot convert them, i installed, reinstalled codecs, the whole bunch, every codec that has anything to do with wmv or asf files, but nothing, can it be a tmpgenc error ?

Except if you had changed your tmpgenc version, then it seems to me that your answered your question yourself, isn't it ?

Did you reinstall windows from scratch as I told you in other thread on the same subject you opened ?

Did you try with a script ?
Did you load it into Graphedit ?
(I already asked you that but perhaps this message disappeared)

Note: I still don''t know why you use this format since so long time. Can you tell me ?

Note2: the best solution is to send a (short) file on www.yousendit.com and post here the link to dl it. this way we will try on our side and tell you what happens.

madmega 04-05-2005 06:08 PM

i installed a new tmpgenc but nothing changed
i never used a script, it always worked fine
i also do not use graphedit
i will try to upload a wmv file were i only can convert the audio from not the video...
http://www.dastard.nl/blooper.wmv

and here is a file where i can't convert the video or the audio from
http://www.dastard.nl/roger.wmv

I have a lot of wmv files from the net.

So, as I said, you answer yourself to the question. This is not tmpgenc the guilty.

I don't care about what you did before. I do care about trying to help you to find a solution. A script can be a solution. Please, if you ask for help, at least try what we suggest to you.

Same as above. This is the best (only ?) way to understand if something is wrong with your codecs or not.

YOU NEVER TOLD THAT !
How can we help you if you do not expose all the problem ? Your message says that tmpgenc refuses the file :banghead:

#1 you opened 2 threads on the same subject without telling it so people can't know that someone already suggested something to you

#2 you have a lot of codecs problem and do not try the solution we expose to you

#3 since 2 monthes everything lead to think taht your registry is screwed up and you never answer to this simple question : DID YOU TRY TO REINSTALL WINDOWS ???

#4 and I still don't know why you use wmv :? (i'm just curious)

madmega 04-05-2005 06:19 PM

see above for the files

i use wmv files because sometimes there are video's that cannot be obtained any other way.
Old interviews, commercials etc. i do not care if the quality is low, it's all about the video material.

And no i did not install windows, for the simple reason that i first have to convert the files on my drives to make extra space, before i reinstall windows.

I will now look into graphedit...i am sorry if it is all a bit confusing but it is hard for me to state my problems in proper english.

I load one wmv into graphedit, and i got a message saying that it some of the streams are in a unsupported format

I also used asftools to save the audio as a acm divx wave file, and then i can load it into tmpgenc, tmpgenc however becomes very slow, but it is converting the audio stream.

I dragged both files to tmpgenc and it encoded them with no problem (audio and video). Tmpgenc version is 2.524.

According to graphedit I use :
- for audio : WMAudioDecoder DMO -> Morgan Switcher -> Direct Sound
- for video : WMVideo Decoder DMO -> ffdshow MPEG4 codec -> Video renderer

My suggestion ? For the last time :
Reinstall windows from scratch

madmega 04-05-2005 06:31 PM

hehehe, i will, i know my registry is screwed up since that windows update crash, but i want to know why, i mean, these codec things are the only problem i have, the rest is working fine...but hey i still want to thank you for your help, i also believe that reinstalling windows will cure every tmpgenc problem i have.

Dialhot 04-05-2005 06:35 PM

It can be either the outside part of the iceberg, or the sand grain that block all the stuff.
In the last case, you can live with this. But if this is the first one... you should reinstall before you loose something more important :D

rendalunit 04-06-2005 07:56 PM

I've been reencoding lots of .asf and .wmv files lately and the software that is working the best for me are: wmv- Riverpast Video Cleaner and asf- EO Video. I convert them to Xvid (highest quality) and then reencode that to mpeg.

Why ren 8O
Why not just encode directly to MPEG :?:

Read my previous post in this thread (Wed Apr 06, 2005 12:29 am).

There is no difficulty to encode asf/wmv sources as soon as you have correct filters on your PC.

Yes, I know you can reencode asf and wmv with TMPGenc if you have the correct filters loaded. I thought Karl was asking why I don't encode directly to mpeg with EO VIDEO AND VIDEO CLEANER

I don't use tmpgenc because it doesn't seem to handle the variable framerate correctly and you end up with an mpeg completely out of sync w/ the audio.

Even if you encode audio and video at the same time ?
This works well on RV10 (mkv container), I don't know for wmv.

'lo,

I had about the same problem 2 days ago.
I had installed the avi/mpeg/wmv joiner (from boilsoft)+ wmfdist. I desinstalled both and then, wmv nor asf could be read in any other player than wmp. nor tmpgenc.
It never happened before.
so, I just reinstalled wmfdist and now, it works.
try to understand...

The tools simply removed the codec when you'd deinstalled it !

jason 04-10-2005 01:28 PM

yeah, but it used to work before I install it too...
but, whatever...

Dialhot 04-10-2005 02:41 PM

asf/wmp codec is a basic codec installed by windows with wmp (that you can't prevent to install). So it is normal to have it to work once windows is installed. It's like MPEG1.
