which app will tell me if it is or isn't. From what I have read most studios use it because of all the 16:9 wide screens out today.

For new *movies* yes, probably. But old movies that comes out in DVD now are sometimes in 4/3.

DVD2AVI (or DGIndex) tells you what is the format. And you can't convert a DVD without using it first.

I find that looking on the back of the box usualy tells pretty good.
Or www.imdb.com and click techncial specs.

There are so much errors that you should not bet on it !
DVD2AVI or DVDPatcher reads directly into the vobs and can't be false.
