OK, just got a new pc and a new dvd burner. I've never had a dvd burner, or a pc that could run one before, so all my experience is with using EO Video for converting avi's into vcd format. Since the program was basically automatic I know next to nothing about converting files into dvd, especially kdvd formats.

What I'd like to learn to do is take anime episodes, which normally have a run time of about 23 minutes, and put 25 per disk.

Now my first problem is that I honestly don't know how to do this. I've got these programs installed currently, but really have no idea how to use them to make a kdvd.

avisynth2.5
dvd2svcd
dvdshrink3.2
riverpast video cleaner
tmpgenc 3.0 xpress
tmpgenc dvd author
tmpgenc dvd source creator
tmpgenc plus 2.5
All recent codec's have been installed as well

Another problem I have is about half the video's I want to turn into kdvd's are already burned as vcd's. With the other half sitting on the pc as avi's.
I've also got a collection of ogm's that I'd like to burn as kdvd's as well.

I registered here because I heard this was THE place for learning, but after reading some of the posts I'm more lost than ever.

Where should someone like me, who knows nothing about any of this video conversion/encoding/ripping/etc., start out?

Good luck I think you should lower your standards a bit, unless you go for a very low resolution.

Actually this place is not for learning. It's an advanced forum which means that you may not grasp much of what it going on.

I believe most of the guides here are pretty much outdated. If I had the time, I might come up with one but at the moment that's not an option -- it would also mean that I would have to answer a gazillion questions that have already been answered before

You'll find more newbie-friendly guides at videohelp.com or doom9.org, but you can find all the answers searching these forums as well.

So I basically just wasted $3 on joining for nothing. Great.

Also, I personally don't care if the resolution is low or high, I just want to make these disks for myself, and I'd prefer to fit 25 anime eps per disk, nothing less than that.

I'm sure Kwag will refund you if you ask him.

I didn't say you get nothing..it's just things you might not understand right now but after familiarizing yourself with the basic stuff. Those two other places I mentioned contain lots of that, Doom9 has also very advanced stuff in addition to the basics, that's the place where the plugin makers hang out.

No panic Abraxsis
I make many dvds with animes ... but 25 ép/dvd is very hard with a good resolution, i usualy put from 12 to 16 ép/dvd at 704x576 (480 ntsc) and 192 kbps audio (stéréo mp2) with a very nice quality.
But 25 ép you should lower at 352x288 (pal) or 352x240 (ntsc) with audio at 128 kbps ...
Because your video will run at ~ 915 kbps and it is very low
If you have a very good script and a compressible source you could try a 352x576 (480 ntsc) or 480x... (but it's not fully compatible dvd, even it runs on many standalone)
I sugget this script to begin :

mpeg2source("your d2v",cpu2="00xx00",idct=6)
GripCrop(352,480,overscan=2,source_anamorphic=fals e,dest_anamorphic=false)
GripSize(resizer="bicubicresize")
undot()
Deen("a2d",1,5,12)
ASharp(0.8,2)
awarpsharp(3,1)
TemporalSoften(2,7,7,3,2)
gripborders()

For avi source, replace the first line with it :

avisource("your avi",false)
blindpp(cpu2="00xx00")

For other sources like mkv or ogm

directshowsource("your mkv/ogm",fps=??).killaudio()
blindpp(cpu2="00xx00")

Cheers.

Thanks, but I think I'm just going to ask for a refund and go back to vcd's. Had the dvd burner for two weeks now and have learned absolutely nothing by visiting multiple sites. Everything is aimed at people who seem to have gone to college or something for this stuff, and not at the novice.
Doom9 seems to have nothing to help, ran a search and came up with more questions or technical babble than "how to" guides for kdvd. Not even going to bother trying to make these things anymore. Least with vcd it was two simple steps. run eo video, burn the file.

edit - just sent kwag a pm to close my account and get a refund.

Try "The Filmmachine". I haven't tried it myself but I've seen some people recommend it. It's supposed to automate the processing.

Doing a KDVD doesn't differ much from doing a regular DVD, it's just using a different quantizer matrix, that's all.

Fine Kwag, I've just filed a dispute with Paypal, since this forum isn't at all for newbies, which I am. I'm not interested in "advanced" methods. I just want simple, basic methods. Quality is not important, just getting these things burned and watchable. And to me watchable would be total crap and completely unwatchable to you apparently from reading your posts.

I was misinformed when told to come here, and I simply want my $3 fee back and my account then closed. Logging out now and I won't be back.

Kwag,

Don't worry about this guy. He's been around other sites complaining that he hasn't got any help, etc from here. But when people do try and help him (such as myself) you get the proverbial 2 fingers. All he wants is an automated way of creating kvcd's - but when pointed at many 'one click' programs, even these appear too complex for him!

Not flaming the guy, but just think the record should be put straight. As he's complaining about wanting to use his dvd burner, when explained that you don't just have to use kvcd's with it, he didn't like the response. When you explain how to create a kvcd / skvcd, he doens't want to know. The fact that he is adament to put 25 anime episodes on one dvd, with the 'best' quality, he just doesn't appear to understand that whilst it can be done, the quality will suffer.

Sorry to have a rant, but this guy has been annoying other people over on another site as well!

Also I can't believe he is making such a fuss about wanting his $3 back!

If I were to pay £3 to join (approx 6$) and I found out that the fee was no refundable I would just put it down to experience and not cry over such a small sum. I mean if it were $10 or $20 then maybe he would have good cause to complain.

Judging by what bay has said he wants it handed to him on a plate. We have all been noobs, im still sort of a noob even after a couple of years , but at least I am willing to try the manual ways of encoding and I have read every guide this forum has to offer which is many, although they are old they are still very helpful.

Some people can't be bothered to do the research and expect everyone to spoon feed them everything that they need to know.

Not to mention the fact that he can always come back here after he's learnt the necessary stuff.

I don't think anyone wants to start teaching people how to do a basic MPEG2 encode when all the necessary things can be found very easily here and in other forums.

I don't know if Abraxsis noticed but Doom9's forum has a dedicated newbies section which contains all the basics..and the search function would have revealed the rest.

I completely agree with you Boulder, I have learned a lot from D9 and from here also and like you say once he knows the basics he can come here and improve on that knowledge, or even just use the search feature of this site I have found lots of answers that way also.

I guess he wants it handed to him on a plate.

Then you should have read better, that KVCD.Net is an "Advanced Video Conversion", CLEARLY at the top of the page

Then you did register at the wrong site

Again, if quality is not important, why did you join KVCD.Net, and post things like:
Code:
What I'd like to learn to do is take anime episodes, which normally have a run time of about 23 minutes, and put 25 per disk.

That's clearly an advanced topic, so you are contradicting what you say about not wanting to learn advanced methods.

You were not misinformed. You simply didn't read the registration page, where it's clearly in black and white, and that's exactly what PayPal will investigate and reply to your claim

Well I am always the 1st one to agree that we are on an advanced video conversion forum.
But we have to acknowledge (such as Boulder did on his 1st post) that although we have lots of guides here most of them are very much outdated.
Not that their methods don't work anymore but we don't do things that way anymore.
Abraxsis has apparently made a mistake by becoming a member but things wouldn't be so complicated for him and other newbs if we had things in their place.
We should have no more than 2 or 3 guides for each item.
The guides would be made by anyone but maintained by Mods.
Anyone should question the guides and submit changes to the Mods.
A specific forum for guides and downloads should be on the top of the forum along with a clear explanation of the KVCD and KDVD formats vs VCD and DVD standards.
Hell, we could even start a Wiki to make these living guides .
Then newbs would come to an advanced forum and still be pointed to more easy forums like vcdhelp or D9 but we would have newbie/intermediate/advanced guides to help out.
It looks like a dictator ship doesn't it?
But I think it could help people and the forum.
Cheers
