BE KIND, I AM A N00B

hi,

i was wondering if you could tell me, how many 40 to 45 minute episodes i could fit onto one 4.7GB dvd. i'm not after amazing quality, but good enough so it looks ok on a normal television when shown. what is the highest compression i could use when converting avi to MPEG2. From trial and error in the past i haven't got more than 5 on one dvd. the episodes were roughly 800mb a piece.

thanks

Novakry

Nova, check out the KDVD forum on how to get 10 hours of 352x480 video on one DVD. The quality is great on a standard 4:3 television.

I backuped my 9 X-files seasons with 25 disc. That is 202 42min long eipsode. 202/25 ~ 8ep/disc. All episodes where in 352*576 (I'm in PAL land); using 2 audio streams at 112 kbits/s.

If VCD quality is enought for you (352*240) then you can put up to 12hours with no problem.

Note: we DO NOT SPEAK about converting crappy avis to KVCD on this site. You know what I mean ? Thanks.

10 hours at this resolution won't be a such descent quality.

Run Undot() and Deen() and it should be good enough

As you plan to do DVD, things are a lot better as there is only 2 templates for NTSC (and 2 for PAL). They are all on the same page :
http://www.kvcd.net/portal/articles.php?lng=en&pg=15

Note: if you want to use a VCD resolution for your DVD, then use the 352*240 template (not the LBR nor the ULBR).

Even with one audio stream, a lot of sources won't give good results. This can be tested nevertheless. All depend on what 'good enough' is for you.

EDIT: Be carrefull ! The question here is about putting TV show ep ! They are very often in 4:3 or 1.77.
10 hours of movies (in 1.85, 2.21 or 2.35:1) is a lot easier.
