What's the relation between video resolution and aspect ratio?
 

If a video's resolution is M X N, so the original aspect ratio (no stretch) of this video is M/N?

Why do so many different resolutions apply to the SAME aspect ratio video?

Don't laugh at a beginner's question. When I do video conversion I see so many different resolutions for AVI with the same aspect ratio.

Because the matter is not the A/R of the video, but the A/R of what is exposed on your screen (the image).

A SVCD is 480*480, a DVD is 720*480 or even 352*480 and VCD is 352*240, but they are all 4:3 (or 16:9 for DVDs) because this is the A/R of the picture that you will look at at the end.


There is none.
It's a fact that people that do avi used to keep the source A/R for the movie they are encoding.
So if the movie is 4:3 then the res will be 640*480 for instance. But they can choose to use a SVCD resolution, why not ? The picture will be 480*480 and of course it will be distort. To look at it you have to restore the original 4:3 A/R.

And this is only the simple aspect of the things, because they are several A/R (pixel A/R for instance...).
