VirtualDub: Archiving VOB Files in What Format?

Hello ALL!

After ripping a DVD I made the mpg files and created a VCD disk. Now I would like to keep a master archive of the movie but not save the 5GB of VOB files and the 1.5gb WAV file.

What would be a good way to store a full copy of the movie? AVI, DivX, Huffy, etc... My idea is that I might want to re-encode the movie as a XVCD or a Half DVD etc.

I believe your best choice is to compress your VOB's with rar ( WinRar ).

Any idea how well they compress?

I was trying to minimize the CD's I need. Ideally I would like to use 2 CDs to back up. DivX 5.02 any good?

I've seen a couple of DivX files made with the 5.02 CODEC. The result is amaizing!. I've actually encoded a couple of AVI's that were done at a very high bit rate with version 5.02, and the MPEG-1 I created looks almost as if I had encoded from VOB's. That's how good the 5.02 is.
So I think that for archival purpose, and future re-encoding, you can use DivX 5.02 with a bit rate of around 3,000 to 3,500. That will give you DVD quality at a much smaller foorprint. Also the latest XVID CODEC works very good too.

Thanks! I will look into the options that are available in VDub. Strange problem I found earlier today on a small test is that there is no audio when encoding using VDub and 5.02
