Hi all!

Could somebody please help me with the following:

I want to backup my Friends DVD collection (10 seasons, 3 DVD's per season, 2 sided-single-layer). Each season contains 24 episodes a 30 minutes per episode (720 min).

Further specs:

Aspect Ratio ---------------> 4:3
Video Format ---------------> PAL

The download page of the templates state that I could put ~6 Hour DVD Quality footage on one DVD (with the 720x576 template) so thought I'd be all set with ~20 DVD's.

I've done the following:

1) Ripped the DVD to the HD
2) Used DVD2AVI to create a D2V file
3) Used PARanoia for AutoCropping (everything else -> default)
4) Adjusted the AVS script as follows:

Code:
MPEG2Dec3_mpeg2source("C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Bureaublad\FRIENDS_SERIES1_D1A\VTS_01_0.d2v")

Removegrain(mode=2)
STMedianFilter(3,3,1,1)

LanczosResize(672,544,8,4,702,568)

DCTFilter(1,1,1,1,1,1,0.5,0)

Addborders(24,16,24,16)
5) Loaded the correct KDVD template in TMPGenc
6) Loaded the AVS script and the .WAV file
7) Adjusted the settings as follows:
  • Tab audio ---------------> 160 kbit/s
    Tab audio ---------------> Enabled "Error protection"
    Tab Advanced ---------------> Set the source range to only include the first episode

p.s. when first loading the template, aspect ratio in the settings dialog is 16:9 and after loading the AVS script, it changed to 4:3.

When I encode, the total filesize for the first 38 seconds (which contains the intro-music and clip) is ~18.258 MB. You can d/l it
here. This would mean that for 30 minutes, the total filesize would be 18.258/38*1800=~864,853MB. This is only 2.8 hours...

I know I'm screwing up somewhere.... I've been reading for about 10 hours (no... not 10h straight ) on this forum, seen a lot of different progs like CQMatic/CalcuMatic/etc/etc... but I don't know IF and/or HOW I should use them....

In short... what am I doing wrong and can somebody point me in the right direction ?

btw. Is it correct that an aspect-ratio of 16:9 requires less space then 4:3 ? Should I convert and if yes... how ?

Sorry for the many questions

Many thanks in advance!

Greets,

Jan-Jaap

6 hours of widescreen material, not fullscreen. Don't expect to put more than 4 hours I fear.

4) Adjusted the AVS script as follows:
Unfortunally these DVDs are interlaced, and your script is not correct for that. See in the "optimal script" section, there is a thread telling how to deal with interlaced sources.
Secondly, you should go to 704x576 and not 720. You will save a lot of bitrate and the quality will be better.
Thirdly : use short pathnames. Copy everything in a folder called "C:\KDVD" for instance.

Don't use tmpgenc to do audio, it is very bad at this.

Why did'nt you rip the episodes one by one ?

This is because I said above, templates are designed for widescreen material (but can be used for 4:3 also, but with less footage).

1/ the template are UP TO xxx hours. This depends a lot on the source.
2/ you can't estimate the total length using a 30s sample.
3/ with tmpgenc you can't estimate anything at all by the way. You should look the "CQMatic" section of the forum where you will find the tool (cqmatic so) that help to find the quality to set into tmpgenc to reach a given filesize. But nothing is 100% sure.

You just expect that the template are for exactly 6 hours, whatever the source. This is a common mistake. Unfortunally, yes you have to use CQMatic, and as told above, don't expect to put more than 4hours with fullscreen footage.

Black borders take less place than real image, so if you encode a 16:9 source in letterboxed mode, then yes it will take less space than 4:3. But 16:9 anamorphic mode IS actually 4:3, so the space is the same.

And it is not possible to convert 4:3 material into 16:9 letterboxed without cropping top/bottom picture. Just forget it
