Aspect ratio and file size issues
 

Hello,

I have just recently encoded a movie to m1v and muxed it with its respective mp2 file for an mpg file. When I burned this mpg to disc and played it in my player, the right side of the screen was cut off, people looked too thin and the video took up the whole screen. (Also reducing some quality)

Now I thought I had set the aspect ratio as so:

Is it necessary to change the source AR setting as recommended on this site? Or maybe I used an incorrect template. :P


Also, the m1v file was 716 MB and its respective mp2 file was 81.4 MB. When I muxed the two files, the mpg was about 808 MB rather than 798 MB. I had to over burn this to disc. Is this normal? I used prediction methods recommended on this site.

If anyone can help me out I would very much appreciate it.

The source AR has to respect the format of your source. Your problem should be elsewhere. Did you think about the overscan ? Are you using an avisynth script ?

For the muxing, did you mux has "VCD not compliant" or "SVCD" ? Anything else is wrong and can lead to what you have.

The overscan? Yes I was using an avi synth script. Apologies if this is the wrong forum.

In mplex I used the similar settings recommended here.

I did also use tmpgenc for muxing as VCD (non-compliant) and still got the 808 MB mpg file.

Well, let say that this is the mux overhead then. But I suggest to burn on a RW and try it in your standalone first ;-)

For computing correct resize parameter to put in an avisynth script, use paranoia ( http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=93 ).
The overscan is the part of the image that is not really displayed by any regular TV set (new LCD and plasma should not have any, but actually a lot of them have). We use to shrink a little the picture and border it with a black bar to avoid some image to be cropped. You will see in paranoia the settings related to overscan. I suggest a value of 1 or 2 depending on your screen.

So you think my filesize problem came from something I may have done wrong in paranoia?

Also since I live in north America and I am encoding a film with a ratio of 19:8, what should I choose as the the source AR in TMPGEnc?

Not at all, we are speaking about two problems there.
The filesize is probably not really one, I just don't remember how big is the overhead (due to muxing) in a VCD. I'm doing DVD since something like 2 years !

Paranoia is to avoid your problem of image cropped.
But now that I am thinking about that : as you are using an avisynth script, then the source A/R should be 4:3, not 1:1.

That's how it was before I changed it. I guess I should've left it. :lol:

That will probably solve the ratio issues I was having.

So after muxing an extra 10 MB came up with the output file. From other experiences with muxing I would have expected the file to be ~798 MB.

Also, an extra 12 MB is added when I tried to create a disc image with VCD Easy.

What do you think could have led to this?
