TMPGEnc Encoding - how to get a good CQ predictor?

I haven't had any luck with any CQ predictors at all! I've followed all the guides but I always end up with an oversized or undersized file. Right now I'm trying to encode in CBR to see how it looks. Is there really a difference in CBR and CQ? Anyone have any suggestions on how to get a good CQ predictor?

Note: I've also tried to manually predict the CQ but the Sample.avs script doesn't want to work. It encodes the sample in like 1 second and then finishes. Really getting frustrated!

you using tmpgenc 2.5? why not HCenc and HCmatic? :)

Brenth 09-06-2008 10:06 PM

Because HCenc and HCmatic is for KDVDs. I need something for KVCDs.

Actually you can do SVCD with HCMatic but no VCD as HCenc doesn't do MPEG1.

But, let's look at your question : CBR is crap. You will use the same number of bytes to encode a static scene than an explosion. You can easily imagine of crappy the second one will be.
When you are bored with CQ prediction you can use 2-pass VBR but not CBR.

Unfortunately there is no good CQ predictor as TMPGEnc isn't abble to have a linear curve when encoding in CQ mode.

Ok, thanks Dialhot. Are there any good guides for using 2-pass VBR? Can you provide a link for me, I would gladly appreciate it :D

vbr does not need any guides, it's like CBR : you enter the average bitrate you want to obtain, and the encoder will match it exactly after the second pass (min and max bitrate to enter too are the same you used for CQ).

Sorry but I don't understand. Is there any rule of thumb for VBR minimum and maximum bitrate?

Edit: Ok I got it now. Looked at the minimum and maximum bitrate from the CQ Settings. The max is 1800 and the min is 300. Thanks for your help! 8)
