KVCD is The format for me?
 

For the last 2 years I've been backing up DVDs, capturing from VCR and Television, and having a great old time. I've pretty much exclusively used AVIs with some sort of MPEG4 codec (usually DivX). I've been on the vcdhelp.com forums for a while (as they're great for capturing/converting) and I've only made a couple VCDs. I'm looking to broaden my horizon and to find out if I should stay the course with AVIs or switch to another format.

My computer does everything as far as home entertainment is concerned. I have a large monitor, great speakers, dvd drive, tv card, etc. I don't own a TV or anything like that. All my media viewing/listening is done on my computer. I have a cdrw and a dvd drive, so I've been putting my movies on 2 cds and using various player's playlists to watch them (zoomplayer 2.9 is great).

What's your opinion on where I should go from here and why? I've thought of SVCD, KVCDs, SKVCDs etc. Basically I'm looking for the best option for playback of movies/tv captures on my computer. I've had great success with the various incarnations of DivX and other such codecs and I'm just looking to see if there's something I'm missing out on. I'm not anywhere close to getting a DVD writer, so that's out of the question.

Any suggestions of formats to try out/not waste my time with (given that they will be for playback, across 2 cds, on my computer)?

Well, I think I've decided which way to go. I'm going to go with Ogg Media. It's not as mature as other formats, but it gives me more options. I really like the idea of keeping AC3 for some of my movies and I like that I can use pretty much any compression format I want (as ogg is just a container).

I did find something else interesting out though. The KVCD templates work on the DVD players of various people I know. Even one of those fancy 5 DVD changers. I'm definitely going to be using them whenever I make a single CD movie for viewing on their systems. They look great too. Awesome job Kwag!
