KVCD: MPEG2 with CQ_VBR at 12 Got Some Noise?

This weekend I made 2 Disney’s movies.

First was Tarzan (89min / widescreen / 23.976fps)
- Start Template: KVCDx3 MPEG2 NTSC-Film
- Resolution: 480x480
- CQ_VBR: 15
- Sound: 128kbps
- File size: 797mb

Second was Monsters Inc. (88min / fullscreen / 23.976fps)
With monsters inc I made 2 encodes, first an MPEG2-480x480, second an MPEG1-352x240

monsters MPEG2:
- Start Template: KVCDx3 MPEG2 NTSC-Film
- Resolution: 480x480
- CQ_VBR: 12
- Sound: 128kbps
- File size: 799mb

monsters MPEG1
- Start Template: KVCD LBR NTSC-Film
- Resolution: 352x240
- CQ_VBR: 35
- MinBitrate: 200
- MaxBitrate: 2400
- Sound: 224kbps
- File Size: 795mb

I tried the LBR cause the MPEG2 with CQ_VBR at 12 got some noises (mosquitoes, not blocks). And I never thought that a VCD resolution could look SOOOO GOOD!!! Of course it's not as sharp as the SVCD, but I barely notice it... And I got 224kbps audio quality!

They were manually encoded with file prediction.
I didn't try the new DVD2SVCD yet. I had some bad experiences with it in the past...
But I'll try it with next movie.

Congratulations Kwag and to the other active members. This site as been absolutely invaluable to me. I've been able to share many home movies amongst my family and I have a great music video collection. It's hard to believe that I can do this from Down Under. Greatly looking forward to using prediction to tweak settings and getting efficiencies in storage.

Does MPEG2 encode smaller files? The MPEG2 480x480 file was about the same size as the VCD file.

They were about the same size because I used the prediction formula to get the best CQ_VBR. If you look the CQ_VBR in the 2 encodes you will notice that the mpeg2 480x480 CQ_VBR=12, and the mpeg1 352x240 CQ_VBR=35.

Yes, I did notice that but they are different resolutions also. I seem to recall reading some time ago that MPG2 was better at compression then 1. If you did a test on the same file and resolution, bitrate CQ etc using MPG1 vrs MPG2 I wonder what would happen? I do not have MPEG2 in my free TMPGENC.

Well, I did a test like this some time ago when I was trying to make kvcd work with my DVD. I can't remember exactly, but I can remember that the file size was almost the same. There was just a small difference (can't remember which one was bigger).

I use MPEG2 because my DVD can play MPEG1 only with VCD resolution. Any resolution above that I have to use MPEG2.

Interesting! I use TMPGenc TMPGEnc 2.56...is it worth paying for the latest version to have MPEG2? Are there problems with having multiple versions?

The REALLY big shame of this is that MPEG4 and or DivX 5.x is really far better at compression and final output given the same params. I have seen DivX 5.02 files (2hr) at 800mb that are equal to DVD.

I guess the ultimate solution is to have a DVD-R burner and make full copies.
