KVCD: not been able to squeeze them enough to fit on one CD?

Greetings!

First, I'm not into 'ripping' or anything like that. I am using my capture card's tuner to record a few tv shows and movies from cable. I am also capturing some home movies. As such, I'm not using bbmpeg or anyother tool like that. I'm capturing from the card to the computer in SVCD format and burn to VCD. What I'd like to do is (for the movies and shows) is fit them on one cd. (The shows I cap in VCD.) I've tried using the KVCD templates and did manage to squeeze a recent Titanic show onto one CD, but I have been unable to reproduce that. The quality was only fair, so I tried a few of the other templates. I must say, the quality of the other templates is pretty good, but I have not been able to squeeze them enough to fit on one CD. I have tried each of the KVCD non-dvd templates including the LBR template. The best I've been able to do is squeeze a 3.4 gig file to right at 1 gig (quite a feat, IMHO, with excellent quality.) I have not played aroung too much with the various tmpgenc settings. I have read through the FAQ here and have poured through the various threads on this excellent forum. What you have done is remarkable. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sure I've left out some vital piece of info, so please let me know what I need to tell you. I've been doing video capture/conversion for quite awhile, but not at the level you all have done.

Thanks.

How long and how big is your movie file?

The movie I had been playing with was 104 minutes, 13 seconds
The file size ended up being just over a gig (I've deleted it and don't remember the exact size.)

That file can easily fit in one CD, if you use the KVCD Plus template for NTSC.

Thanks!
I already had dl'ed th predictor application and read through that thread, but I'll go back again. Never know what I might have missed.
I'll check out FitCD tomorrow. I guess this is one of those things you have to keep at.

Thanks!

Hi Kwag!

Just wanted to say that, after re-installing tempgenc 2.58, I have been able to squeeze, with really good quality, almost 2 hours on one CD. I capture in slightly better than SVCD mode and then use your kvcd-cq-352x240-_NTSCFILM_ template.

One thing: the 24 frames results in a slight 'jitter' when there is horizontal motion on screen. I have not played with this yet. Do you have any suggestions? Did I miss something in the FAQ?

Thanks, and good work!

This happens because you're taking either 29.97fps or 25fps (depending on where you live) interlaced material and outputing it as 23.976fps progressive material.

The best solution to the problem is probably to use FieldDeinterlace (from the Decomb package) to deinterlace the material and then ConvertFPS to change the frame rate to 23.976fps (these are both Avisynth filters, by the way). With this method you'll notice slight "blending" from ConvertFPS, but this is unavoidable and you'll even see it on some TV movies that have had their frame rates changed.

Another solution would be to use FieldDeinterlace on its own and then change the templates to use 29.97fps or 25fps. You'll avoid the blending but you'll be able to fit 20% fewer minutes on the disc at the same CQ_VBR level.

Or you could live with the jitter ;).

Not the greatest news, but at least there are options. Hope that helps.

Greetings!
KWAG, you da man!

I've been playing around with the templates since my initial posts and have gotten some REALLY nice results. I'm not changing anything about the templates, rather I've been changing my capturing techniques. I'm doing a highly modified SVCD method (from the ATI app):
* 480 x 480 ntsc
* 44,100 khz, 16 bit stereo audio
* deinterlacing checked
* defaults for 'p' and 'b' frames (admittedly, I'm clueless here)
* 9.99 mbit/sec (VBR)
* motion estimation quality set to 80

Once the capture is complete, I'll use either the old standard template (KVCD CQ 352x240NTSCFilm) or the newer LBR NTSC FILM PLUS. Either will result in very good (near excellent) quality.

Now I can get two Enterprise eps on one CD and they look just as bad on cd as they do over the air. (Seriously, the local UPN affiliate sucks.)
Now I'm transferring some old tapes to KVCD and the quality is nearly the same.

A side question: anyone have a motherboard with on board C-MEdia audio? I do and the captured audio was crap. My only solution was to replace it with an add on card. I got the Philips PSC 604 dynamic edge 4.1. Great card with true surround out. Good enough for my home office and none of that damned noise the cmedia crap put in my captures.

Anyway, thanks for the great templates!
