hi kwag,

i've done quite a lot of kvcds yet with mixed results but most of them
have really good picture quality and they getting even better when i use
the filters for dark-blocks removement and sharpen (i really like the
blockbuster & fluxsmooth combination).

thanks to kwag and sansgrip for their great work...

no doubt...the x3 and 704x576plus templates give great quality
and surely they are best for 2-3 disk solution
but i always try to fit movies up to 120 min. on sinlge-cdr(90) and
so most of the times i use the KVCDx2-CQ-704x576-_PAL_-1CD template.
reducing the resolution to 480x576 and raising the cq value gives me
good results and it plays fine on cyberhome adl528 player.

btw.: i've done a test-cdr with clips of all of your templates (min-biterate
down to 64 for LBR) and my player likes them all

did you ever think about building such a template for a 480x576 resolution
with some optimations for medium/high-action scenes

Hi mfb,

The closest template to 480x576 is the x3 at 528x576 or 544x576, which is superior to SVCD, and is almost DVD quality. I guess I don't like SVCD 480x480(576) resolutions after seeing the x3 results

But the x3 template doesn't work as well with PAL as it does with NTSC. I managed to fit 45 - 60 minute maximum on 1 cd. For movies like Episode 2 I use the XVCD 1 CD template as it gives a very sharp picture at very good quality.

kwag I don't get it...

The "old" KVCDx2 1CD Template still works fine for me too... It looks way better than the new LBR Template on bigger screens.

It all depends how long your movie is. A two hour movie with any x2 on a single CD will never look as good as if you use the LBR. It's just too high resolution for so much time, so it will look very blocky, even on low action scenes. The LBR will never look as sharp as any x2, but it will be almost blockless on movies up to two hours. It's a trade off between sharpness and blockiness. For low action movies, you can use the x3 to put almost two hours on a single CD-R. As a rule of thumb, I don't put more than 60 minutes on a CD with the 704x480 PLUS or the x3 if the movie is high action. If I want to put a complete action movie on one CD, then the LBR is the way to go.

Ok, thats the reason why i asked for your opinion about a 480x480(576) template
i think i would be great to combine 'the best of both worlds'. I imagine a mix of
x2 (sharpness) and LBR (no blockiness) to get a template able to fit ~110 min.
of medium/high action movies to a single cd-r (which would cover the playlength of a
lot of movies). With the x3 and 704x576plus (PAL) templates i'am able to fit only
about 50 min on one disk but i got very reasonable results with x2(PAL)-templates on
low action movies (up to 120 min. on cd-r90).

What if you load the LBR template and modify the the size to 480x480(576) or what ever reolution you want, that is what I would try.

That's exactly what i've allready tried, but here i get filesizes comparable
to the x3-templates (it's because of the tight gop of the LBR, i guess)

but thanks for your adivse anyway...

What about load the x3, change to 480x480 and lower the CQ_VBR to 20 or 15...
