If your original DVD (or AVI file, or anything else) is in 16:9 and you want your kvcd to be like it on your 4:3 TV, in TMPGEnc, in the "Settings", in "Advanced" Tab, in "Source Aspect Ratio", choose "16:9 525 line (NTSC)" (or "16:9 625 line (PAL)" depending of your system). After that, go on "Video" Tab, in "Aspect Ratio", choose "4:3 525 line (NTSC)" (or "4:3 625 line (PAL)" depending of your system, again!) and all will be ok (i think)!

When i convert my Widescreen avi's to SVCD i always run
the Wizard in TEMPGEnc. And in Setting/Advanced/ Video Arrange Method
I choose "Full screen(Keep aspect ratio).
Then I get a' Widscreen mpg output.

If you use an Avisynth script and FitCD then make sure "anamorphic" is checked for the source (the one at the top only!), then in TMPGEnc set source aspect ratio to 1:1VGA (video arrange method- full screen) and destination a.r. to 4:3 (PAL or NTSC depending on your location). FitCD automatically detects if it's widescreen- so "anamorphic" should be checked when you load the widescreen movie.

Is there an aspect setting or method of cropping that will allow reducing the top and bottom black bands about half while not distorting the vertical aspect? I would like to produce output that trims the sides enough to allow this with 16:9 dvd source. I use:

Smart Ripper
DVD2AVI
TMPGenc
Nero
KVCDx2
Apex 600A DVD
Standard TV

Try "AutoCrop" filter. Do a search on Doom9 for the download and
filter settings.
