I've been testing several templates using different modifications and on all of them, it seems that CQ has a lot darker picture than AVBR. It also seems that if you switch to MPEG2 on either one, the picture returns to it's normal brightness.

Hi Paul0889,

Is this viewed on your standalone DVD player or software player?
I can't see any difference on my encodes, as far as colors or brightness, either MPEG-1 or MPEG-2

If you take any of the KVCD templates and encode a small sample, then change the encoding to MPEG-2 with the same template and same source, the result should be basically the same. They should look the same on your monitor, and only the file size will be slightly larger on the MPEG-2 file.

Hi Paul0889,
I've made the same experiences on PAL-encodings. The templates that are using CQ produces darker video than VBR_CQ. (both software and standalone player). They got Output 'VUV data as Basic...' checked by default. Try to uncheck this setting and the pictures getting brighter, at least for my eyes and the x2-templates will produce significatly less filesize :P

Hey kwag,

what exactly is the difference between Mpeg1 and Mpeg2 than?? Why would you use MPEG 2 anyway. I know it looks sharper with high bitrates, but is that worth the increase in file-size?

For lower bit rates, MPEG-1 looks much better than MPEG-2. That's a proven fact. And MPEG-2 files are larger than MPEG-1. MPEG-2 scales better than MPEG-1, but that's at bit rates higher than 2000Kbps.
