If I record straight to MPEG 1 instead of AVI, do I even need TMPGenc?

I've been using VirtualDub for all my video needs. I just got a DVD player a month ago and I'm hot on making some VCDs. I've already used TMPGenc and VCDEasy to go from AVIs to playable VCDs.

Here's the BIG question. I can't get anything over 80 minutes on the CD like I keep reading about. I recorded an 120 minute movie and it came out to a little over 1 gig. I ran it through TMPGenc with the NTSC 352x240 template from KVCD and it was still over 1 gig.

What am I doing wrong?
Do I have to get the original file size down first?
If I record straight to MPEG 1 instead of AVI, do I even need TMPGenc?

Thanks.

Another question

I've also noticed that if I take a DIVX file that's 400 meg or so and run it through TMPGenc, it comes out about 900 meg. What's up? HELP.

Look at the "Sticky" at the top of that thread.
