kwag -- any thoughts on the "mini-DVD" format? That is, encoding with MPEG-2 and authoring as if for a DVD, then burning to CD-R.

Yeah, tried it on my five DVD players several months ago. No go
Doesn't work on any of them

I've tested it in my player (Philco) and it doesn't recognize it as a DVD.

However, it can read the disc and shows the UDF file system with the .vob files, and it can play the .vobs (as if it was "ISO MPEG"). The good news is that it handles high bitrates, the bad news is that it doesn't set the aspect correctly.

The audio in mine plays OK, but only the 1st track - I can't switch audio tracks. The subs don't work too, and if the video is anamorphic it gets cropped in the TV.
