Recommended TMPGEnc settings
 

Here's a quick write-up of the settings I've come to use with TMPGEnc. They seem to be optimal for use with KVCD.

First, get TMPGEnc 2.58 (not 2.59 as it seems to have problems producing correctly sized files) from here.

Download the ReadAVS VFAPI plugin from here, then install as per the instructions in the readme.

Run TMPGEnc and close the wizard if it pops up. Go to the Option menu and select Environmental Setting...

General

Choose the following options:

Enter a suitable location in the "Temporary file" text box. The partition on which this is located should have at least a gigabyte free.

CPU

Ensure that all checkboxes in the "CPU setting" group that can be checked are checked, except "Use multi-thread" if you only have one processor. TMPGEnc will then automatically select the fastest way of accessing the CPU.

Note: Some assert that TMPGEnc is made faster by checking the "Use multi-thread" option, then enabling the "Enable pipeline", "Enables pipeline for Motion search", and "Prefetch Video" checkboxes. I doubt it would make much difference, but I've not benchmarked it yet.

Sound

If you want you can choose a different sound sample to play when TMPGEnc has done encoding.

External tool

Since you'll almost certainly be using HeadAC3he to encode your audio, this tab is not relevent.

VFAPI plug-in

This tab is perhaps the most important. Uncheck all plugins except "Avisynth/VirtualDub script reader v0.1". If you do not see that plugin listed, make sure you installed the ReadAVS plugin properly and restart TMPGEnc.

It's important to note that you must be outputing in YUY2 format from Avisynth for the plugin to work. Never use the "ConvertToRGB" Avisynth filter at the end of your script, or it will not load into TMPGEnc.

Now hit the "OK" button and enjoy :).

Thank you for posting the settings, howeve in my Environental Settings -> VFAP Plugins, under READAVS it tell me "This File Can Not Be Loaded", however I have no problem loading my avs script and it will process the file. How can I tell TMPGEnc to load this file> I have loaded the TMPGEnc ReadAVS, have the DLL's etc.... thank you

Have done that and the results are the same. There seems not to have any effect on TMPGEnc, as stated I can process the avs without any problems, it' s just that TMPGEnc tells me the READAvs can not be loaded. Thanks

from the readme in readavs:

To install this filter, you will have to do the following:

1. Unpack the archive to a temporary directory.

2. Move the ReadAVS.dll file to your TMPGEnc directory.

3. Edit the ReadAVS.reg file with a text editor so that the path to
the DLL is correct for your system.

4. Double-click on the ReadAVS.reg file to add its contents to the registry.

5. Close and restart TMPGEnc if it's running.


Once you've completed the steps above,
you can delete the contents of the temporary directory.

Is there any advantage to use TMPGENC with Avisynth using READAVS, or using it without READAVS (and with converting to RGB24) will encode at the same speed.
I've never used READAVS, and I've aways been happy. Yet, if this would speed up the thing....

You shouldn't have to convert to RGB at all...
More, if your source is DVD you should always keep your colorspace yv12 at all times.
Try using readavs.dll as explained by jorel and remove the converttogrb().
You'll see few changes in quality but and speed but remember: yv12 is colorspace of DVD. If you want your encoded movie to be as similar as your DVD you should not use any converttoXXX().
BTW I'm very surprised you can load any avisynth script into tmpgenc without readavs.dll. Maybe you're using directshow filter instead. If so stop using it.

If you don't use avisynth's converttoxxx, you'll be relying on XviD if you've got that installed. And there are some possible inaccuracies arising from that, I believe. I prefer to use avisynth's converttoxxx because it's better at that.

I'm trying readavs (but with converttoYUY2) to see if there is any speed advantage.

Edit: Yes, I've always done that (loading .avs file) into tmpgenc without problems - perhaps it's using directshow as you say (hmm that would be slower indeed). I'm using the registered tmpgenc plus.

If you do not use readavs you are using directshow handler of tmpgnc. This way all dshw filter that are on the disc can be used even without your notice. This include Divx Antifreeze, DirectVobsub and most of all, ffdshow !

The filters can modificate DEEPLY the video stream and thus, you do not master at all what is done on the picture you send to tmpgenc.

That is not recommanded at all.

Note: NO directshow handler of tmpeg is not slower than readavs. Do not mistaken with directshowsource that is a lot slower than avisource or mpeg2source in avisynth.
