what is up with the updated templates and the chenges to the Q matrix...I dl'ed one to check and see that there were changes made to the "Intra" block section...how does this improve KVCDs over the standard...specifically: what effect will it have to the pictures quality/file size?

Intra:

8 9 12 22 26 27 29 34
9 10 14 26 27 29 34 37
12 14 18 27 29 34 37 38
22 26 27 31 36 37 38 40
26 27 29 36 39 38 40 48
27 29 34 37 38 40 48 58
29 34 37 38 40 48 58 69
34 37 38 40 48 58 69 79
16 18 20 22 24 26 28 30

also, Kwaq you say in your "what's happening" post:

All of these templates have a CQ value, which is there just as a "filler" value.
filler value? what does that mean exactly...I ask because, try as I might, I never had much success with the prediction formula...my stupidity I guess but it's true.

I am very pleased with the 704x480 template (with slight modifications to please my Mintek 29.97 fps and 22 VBV)...the picture is truly glorious. I've gone as far as re-encoding SVCDs into KVCDs with no discernable lose of picture (my mintek does not like SVCDs).

I know most of your hardcore posters visit daily to stay up with the changes but I've been away since x-mas and would like to enjoy the updates but also would like to understand what has been changed...

As always, my deepest thanks and greatest respect (oh, I'm gushing now)

Hi Rig,

The "filler" CQ just means that the value is not to be taken as a default encoding value. The templates are meant to be used with file prediction from now on. Not as before where we would just encode with the default value, and pray that the movie would fit .
The new matrix does a supedb job on reducing low frequency DCT blocks, and even on high speed low lit scenes, the blocks are blended and give a more natural picture. If you really want to know all the details of what happened, you can read this thread: http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2073 which is very very long, but there you'll find all the ideas and samples of what we did.
