Ok, I guess I need to post a sample here, since I'm not good at describing those MPEG Artifacts...

I'm trying to convert the LOTR SEE to one DVD using Full D1 Template... some artifacts I just can't get rid of, no matter how I raise the CQ level...
They're kinda dancing artifacts in the background in some scenes...
especially in low-complexity areas... I tried blockbuster noise, but it's hard to find the right variance value for my purpose...

any ideas?

ok i watched carefully and indeed the picture is not as clean in the source, and artifacts can be seen... it's much worse in the encoded version though... i guess there's no way of getting rid of those artifacts instead of smoothing the picture right?
or how about the line "ConvertToRGB24" in Avisynth script... do we still do that?

Interesting... I'm not sure if I want to smooth this movie that heavily though since I actually have room enough on a DVD-R... (I start to hate this whole DVD-r thing... It really DOES kill all the fun...)

What about the RGB24 conversion? right or wrong?

Well, it kills the fun if you just copy DVD-Rs to DVD-Rs. But if you apply all the techniques we have been using here, there's no reason that we can push the limits on DVDs too . As I said before: While others will be putting 2 hours on a DVD, we'll be putting 6 hours with the same quality on a DVD or ~10 hours (half D-1), and that's fun

I don't think you'll need that

you're right it's fun, but I noticed that I started to get lazy you know... Why do I need to put 10 hours on one DVD-R after hours of testing while I can still put 6 hours on the disc... What I mean is you're so easily temted to just burn the file to disc once you're satisfied with the quality, without looking at the filesize, since it will ALWAYS fit... :

The thing Is... I am not quite satisfied with quality...
I mean the quality is great, and I'm probably too picky, but I just thought that with an average bitrate of 2000+ @ mpeg2 , the backgrounds would be more stable... dancing blocks at some scenes, and that really I hate...
I might actually try the faery dust filter on a DVD source...
or do you have other recommendations?

BtW... it's not a bad authored DVD (LOTR)

Try FaeryDust . It takes a hell of a long time to encode, but the quality is just amazing. It also does a superb job on backgrounds
