First thanks for taking time to read my quetion
i know its kinda confusing but i am currently using leadtek tv card to watch and record tv shows. However, because of hd space limiation i am forced to record the show with mpeg2 instead of lossless avi(i mean Huffyuv code). I really care about the quality, so i really don't want to burn them as vcd or svcd but i don't have a dvd burner either!. It seems that converting the files to kvcd is my only solution. However, the only way i can think of is to convert mpeg2(the orginial file) > avi then > mpeg2(with kvcd). But i am afraid that some frames will be lost. So, is it possible to covert mpeg2(dvd ntsc) to mpeg2(kvcd)???
Thx for answering my question

There are a couple of options I would try (assuming you have tried to set the video source in tmpegenc to your mpeg2 file and it didn't recognise it ).

I've never tried it myself, but it should be possible to load the dvd mpeg2 file into DVD2AVI. If you create a project file from this, you should be able to encode the project file direcly in TMPEGEnc. Whether you want to apply filters to it via an avisynth script is up to you but it is possible to load the D2V file from dvd2avi direcly into tmpegenc.

The other option (again not tried it myself) is to frameserve it directly from avisynth or vdub. (Not sure if you are familiar with any of these ). Via avisynth you probably need to use DirectShowSource. From Virtual dub it should be a case of loading it and starting frame server. In both cases, you need to load the created frameserved file into tmpegenc.

Either way you may need to multiplex the audio seperately.

Wow Fiz you reply so fast
yeah i was just able to added that the tmpgenc does not recognize my mpeg2 files even after i installed powerdvd.

By the way, my mpeg-2 files has 4000 bitrates and 333 video quality( i don't know what that is either, it shows in my winfast PVR which comes along with the tv card)

Thx for the help FIZ

P.S. one more question, does it make a difference between 23bps and 29.97bps? i know its the difference between ntsc and pal, but does that make pal looks better?

if you captured from tv (ntsc) then it should stay at 29.97 fps. As you are encoding to MPEG2 KSVCD then you do not need to deinterlace.

If you try to encode it at a lower fps setting it will look jerky because the source is actually 29.97 fps. Glad you got it working

Unless the actual captured footage was shot FILM, then you need to "IVTC" and encode at 23.976 with 3:2 pulldown enabled. This way, you'll restore the original filmed FPS and it will look MUCH better than encoding directly at 29.97fps

I'm sure even your knowledge of PAL surpasses mine!! We have it easy here, 25fps and most dvd's are encoded as progressive!

yo guys sorry but i get some questions
i just check the mpeg files which i converted to kvcd and when i enable it to full screen, the show only show up on the center of the screen with black boarders. So i check the setting and i find out that

1. the frame rate is set to be 23.397fps. However, is it possible to stay at 29.92fps and is it still able to play on dvd player or dvd-rom?

2. i think my source aspect ratio is ntsc 720x480 but in tmpgenc i can only find 704x480 ntsc. Is there anyway to maintain it at 720x480 so the board thing will dissappear? (i guess that is what causes the boarder)

3. i was reading kwag's reply stating that i have to IVTC it if it is a short film. Well its kinda coufsing, the show is only 23 mins, so i guess it is "short". But i record it from tv, so it is not really a "film". Can anyone give me some suggestions?

Sorry i have so many questions but i am really a dumb newbie
and again thanks for taking your time to read this.

Oh by the way have a wonderful valentime's day!

What player are you viewing it with? The aspect ratio does not show correctly with some players. Try powerdvd or windvd if you have it.

Yes. You need to make sure that the source is "really" 29.97fps. Load the source MPEG2 in DVD2AVI and do a preview. The stats window will tell you if the video type is FILM. If the Video Type is FILM or FILM at a percentage higher or equal to 95% then you need to set 'Field Operation' under the video menu to 'Forced Film' otherwise leave it as 'None'. Forced Film will do a pulldown to make it 23.976fps and None will leave it at 29.97fps.

I don't think this is what is causing the borders (I may be wrong). Make sure your video arrange method is set to Full Screen in TmpegEnc.

See answer to point 1. I think you'll find that Kwag said 'SHOT' not 'SHORT'

i am using both vcdcutter and powerdvd to view the files but they both give me the same result.

And sorry about the shot film i was reading too fast
I also check the video type and it shows NTSC, so i guess i have to leave it at 29.97fps

By the way, i altered some settings last night and finally i get a kvcd mpeg2 file which has exactly the same aspect ratio as the one before. Here is what i change

1. i open tmpgenc, click setting, then click video and change frame rate to 29.97fps instead of "23.976fps(internally 29.97fps)"

2. then i change to encode mode to interlace instead of 3:2 pulldown when playback

3. i also change the aspect ratio from 16:9 to 4:3.

4. Finally i click advanced and choose 4:3 525 lines ntsc (704x480) in source aspect ratio even though my source should be 720x480 ntsc

Well then i start the process and the final mpeg2 comes out with fine quality. I also burn it using nero and i can play it on my cd-rom.

Is there any suggestion???
