kdvd: get 6 hours of dvd quality video on a dvd-r with ac3 sound?
 

Hello,
today somebody told me about the KDVD-template and i have a question before i try it. I would like to know if you can get 6 hours of dvd quality video on a dvd-r with ac3 sound or do i have to convert the soundstream to mp2 ?

Welcome Scav77 :D,

You can get ~6 hours with mpeg audio ( with surround ) and a bit rate of 224Kbps. If you want AC3 audio, you'll still get ~4.5 hours full DVD quality. Here's a sample of what 6 hours would look like on one DVD-R: http://www.kvcd.net/kdvd-v2-sample.m2v

Thanks kwag, 4,5 hours will be enough for 2 movies :lol:
But if you encode a NTSC-DVD and you use MPEG Layer 2 sound, its not DVD-compilant anymore. You can use MP2 for PAL, but not for NTSC.

Hey there Scav77,

Strictly speaking, according to what I've read, the north american DVD spec calls for the primary audio track of the main movie to be DD 5.1 (AC3), secondary MP2 or PCM tracks are permitted. So basically most if not all region 1 DVD players should play a DVD that has only MP2 audio without issue.

I've yet to find a region 1 DVD player that has a problem with this, although I've only used Pioneer, JVC & Sony models .....
