Help with making Mpegs for VCD burn?

HI all ,
I`m still trying to get spiderman to go from a AVI to Mpeg so I can Make a VCD.
I`ve just tried using avi2vcd , and says the audio is not 8 or 16 bit.
Tmpge says un supported , and cant open???
ANY help?
TRied XING and went to do a video cd in pal ...got the file for the once movie and got
" Video soure file may be in use my another programn such as a editor or player.Close the other programme and try again. This error can also occur if the file is unsupported or created by a hardware codec , that is no longer on this machine."

Hi James

Make sure you have the right DIVX codec installed to get TMPEG working, and if it still doesn't work, try to give DirectShow filter a higher priority (Environmental setting/VFAPI plugin)

hint: If you could play the AVI with MediaPlayer then you have the codec installed ...

I was able to convert spiderman from avi to mpeg. I had to extract the audio from the original avi with virtual dub because no matter what codec I installed tmpgenc wouldnt accept the file. Then I loaded the original avi and the extracted .wav file into tmpgenc and it encoded it. The only problem is when I checked the final encode after 5 mins or so the audio becomes so out of sinc that its not worth watching. I had a go at fixing the stretched audio but gave up cause nothing is worth that much hassle.!!!

Unless you know how to fix the audio I wouldnt bother with it.

You dont have to save the audio separately in virtualdub. I believe I tried to help you before but someone told you to make a separate wav file. I know that works too but I had a similar problem with a movie I downloaded which was encoded with Divx 5 and I believe 4 bit mp3.
In fact I tried to get that movie from edonkey but no go.
Just load the file in vdub, make sure video processing is set to directstream copy, make sure the audio is set to full processing mode and select conversion, 44100, 16 bit stereo, high quality, then leave it as avi audio (not wav).

Then under file select "save as avi" or old format avi. This will not take long because the video will be direct streamed but the audio will be changed to uncompressed pcm (avi format). Vdub kind of remuxes the file back together and it may prevent that out of synch problem. The file will be larger but should be manageable. Try the new avi on your PC see what you think. Load this avi in tmpg video source the audio will automatically be selected for you. The rest is your call. Do a partial encode. If you stop the tmpg process the mpg will still be saved up to that point. If its ok you win. If not you haven't wasted more than 1 hour.
The other options have been covered on this forum by various other users with synch problems but they are for another day.

Let me know.
