I am new to KVCD but not to ripping or svcd.

I want to back-up my son's dvds, you know so he doesn't ruin the original. I usually make vcds for him because most kids movies are under 80 minutes long and I don't want to go in the living room and change the disc halfway through the movie, but I am looking for better quality. Standard vcd is as we all know 1150kbps but for an 80 minute movie you can make an xvcd which is around 1225.

Now for myself I make svcds at 2500kbps constant bitrate (3discs)

Here are my questions
1. Are these kvcd templates like xvcds or xsvcds?

2. Can I use the template(s) with the progrqams I already use to make vcds/xvcds? (Smart ripper,dvd2avi, tmpgenc and nero)

3. How do I figure out what Template to use?

4.What is the equivilent template to svcd at 2500kbps cbr (3discs) ?

Thanks in advance

Yep

That depends what quality you want to get. You'll have to make some test clips with different templates, and see which one you like. We always suggest KVCDx3

With KVCDx3 (528x480), you get higher quality that any SVCD, and you'll fit just about any movie on 2 CDs with near DVD quality. Not SVCD quality . You might even fit your movie on one CD with a very good quality, and sometimes you'll just do that instead of going for 2 CDs.

Take a look at the KVCD guide link on the main page and look around the forum, specially the file prediction section.

The guide doesn't use smart ripper and that is what I am used to. I'll read the file prediction section but what is it ?

Can I just use sefty guide to svcd and use the kvcdx3 template in place of the svcd template?

BTW- Read the post I made on vcdhelp, the post where you directed me here.

Thanks talk to you soon

You will. You might want to download the compatibility CD image (version 2 ) on the "What's hapenning" section, and burn it with Nero just to see what resolutions work on your standalone DVD players

I use DVDDecrypter. It's better than SmartRipper and also more updated.

All KVCD methods for encoding use CQ mode. We don't use 2-pass VBR or CBR, because the highest quality produced by TMPEG is in CQ mode. You need to do file size prediction in order to figure out what the final file size of your encode will be.
