KVCD: Quality in TMPGEnc Looks Very Very Nice!

Hi all

I have managed to get a 90min movie to a 2 cd target using 480x576 mpeg 2 max bitrate=3500 min bitrate=900 CQ=80. I have haven't played it on my stand alone dvd player and 28" widescreen tv yet, but the quality in tmpgenc looks very very nice

If the quality is really good i would be happy to accept 2 cd.

Whats your opinions

If your player plays the 528x576 Mpeg1 template then i suggest you try that instead. The quality for this template is outstanding and Mpeg1 produces better files at lower bitrates. I reckon using some nice filters and file prediction you could get your 90 minute movies on to 1 CD at 528x576 and still have better quality than your 480x576 CD's

My player doesn't do 528x576 but it does 544x576, but at this res getting this particular movie to 1 cd using mpeg 1 i my CQ has to be as low as 50, thats with an mp2 @128bit audio. I thought CQ 50 is alittle low

True, CQ 50 is a bit low. However, if you are going to 2 CD's why don't you bump up the resolution to 544x576 and get the better quality. I have found in the past there is no real need to go higher CQ than the template defaults. You can get higher file sizes but not better quality.

When you try to get it to fit on 1 CD, what filters are you using. Are you getting rid of the overscan? Try using the MergeLuma and MergeChroma filters that are being talked about in the Avisynth forum.

Thats some heavy filtering! Personally, i'm not a fan of blockbuster and (someone correct me if i'm wrong) its author (sansgrip) has said you don't really need it with the new KVCD templates. My currency favourite script for 1 CD encodes is (after the resize) :

mergechroma(blur(1.5

)
mergeluma(blur(0.2))
SpaceDust()
TemporalCleaner()
DctFilter(1,1,1,1,1,.5,.5,0)

I don't like to go below 528x576 to be honest. using the new filters you can get around 90 mins of widescreen film. Any longer than and i o for 2 CDS
