KVCD: Speed problem - audio and video play too fast?

ok

i encoded my first kvcd (352x240) and was shocked to get a quality 500 meg movie. I noticed it did "processing inverse telecine" at the beginning, which took a LONG time. I guess what I ended up w/ was 23.99 fps and It plays great in my apex 2100 (most everything does). But in my toshiba DVD 2201
The movie plays too fast, kinda like in seacrh/FF.. Both the audio and the video play fast. could theis be becuase the framerate is too low? maybe it needs to be 29.9xx (i forget) ...
I seen a lot of posts here about framerates and telecine, but nobody seems to have mentioned a movie playing at wrong speed...

Thanks

Could it be that you encoded the audio at 48Khz instead of 44.1Khz

I dont think so, im encoding it again, the only thing i changed is the framerate and this is pasted from the bottom of tempgenc:

MPEG-1 352x240 29.97fps CQ 70, Layer-2 44100Hz 128kbps

last time was at 23.9x framerate

hopefully, Ill know in a few hours (well, maybe more than a few)

Now Im really confused because it did the inverse telecine thing again (much faster tho) and after I started I noticed the convert to 24 fps box is checked,
but as I ran the wizard I changed the framerate to 29.97 so I guess its working redundantly? I woulda stopped it but its 30% done, I guess I'll soon see. :)

BTW thanks for answering, and a big thanks for your hard work on these templates. I for one really am grateful you share your work and expertise with me and all of us :)

sigh,

The new one at 29.97 fps does the same thing. Plays great in my apex, but in the toshiba it starts fine after about a min. or less it speeds up, looks like its playing at double speed... back to the drawing board.

Nobody else has experienced this?

hi friend Fred|Flintstone

i really search about your problem.
a good idea is turn 48k to 44.1k like Kwag post here.
i don't have the toshiba player, but in some templates,i got problems using 48k. is better do a test with a little sample.

this is the Compatibility Test ,and can help a lot, read and download please:
http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2464

i search and found this 2 links:

the first, is called "Compatible Models" but you model "toshiba DVD 2201"
maybe is newest, but the link is a good reference:(too big) 8O
http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic....oshiba&start=0

and the second is the thread called "standalone dvd/vcd players",
is a big reference too:
http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=13

post the result,please!

ps:
is really a good idea turn 48k to 44.1k first, if it don't work,
download the "compatible models test" and burn,is fast and you will see what template/resolution work in your player.

hi,
I succesfully found more settings that do not work so, I guess, I'm narrowing it down (grin).
I have sucessfully played dozens of vcds on that toshiba so I'm sure sooner or later I'll get it right. (sooner I hope). I know it will not play SVCDs even w/ that header "trick".

I have been encoding the audio at 44.1 khz, as i said in a prev message. I never seperated the audio from the video, It seems too complicated a process for me at the moment. I run the template, press stop, select system video+audio and hit start. ( I listen thru 3" TV speakers anyway.)
The video and audio are in sync, they just both play too fast...

I downloaded the nero compatability image, and I will try it..
I'll let you know soon.
I do kinda find it hard to believe I'm the first one w/ this problem though,
but well hopefully after solving it , We can save somebody from burning all the coasters I have been.

Thankx for the assistance
ps Jorel, I'm honored you call me friend :)

ps:
i'm waiting your answer about " nero compatability image ".

First, I updated my profile, I didnt realize that it would put a button on all my posts to that picture, sorry to anybody offended. I just thought it was funny thing to stick in profile.

I ran the nero test, at first glance it seems the first 3 play (354x240) the bottom 3 are green. (on the toshiba) I kinda expected this as, the toshiba as I got it from the store didnt play nothing but dvds, VCDhELP.COM had some obscure combination of keys u pressed in the remotes and it now plays vcd 1.x and vcd 2.0 standards.

On my apex, all but #6 played perfectly. I imagine the change to 544x480 will fix that.

back to the toshiba, i said at first glance becuase the clips are so short. After playing repeatedly, I noticed that as Jerry Heads thru the door, it jumps like a scratched record till he comes out , and fixes itself just as he speaks. This happens exactly the same on all 3 clips.

This prompted me to test different vbr settings, like min = 600, 800
max =1200 1400 ect.

I have come to the conclusion that this player will not correctly play back vbr mpeg files :(

watching my previous movie a little longer, the problem was the same.
speeds up, pauses, gets jerky ect...

oh well,
time to smash the drawing board...
