What can cause jerky playback?
 

Making SVCD from DVD source, I sometimes get jerky playback, but only in certain places it seems. The picture freezes for a second or less and then jump forward and goes on. This usually causes a temporary audio sync problem. This may happen a few times and then the film will play on just fine for a while, seems to happen in spells.

This could be a media problem. Have you tried other brands :idea:

Does it happen only on NTSC?

I have to encode to MPEG2 for my Apex (1100w 1meg) player,
and when I use a bitrate too low, it exhibits actions exactly like you`re describing.

I am encoding NTSC, yes, and MPEG 2.

What would you suggest for the low bitrate problem? Raising it to? What will that affect?

I frequently get this problem and I'm not the only (see other threads). I was able to solve the problem by converting to PAL (using DVD2SVCD). I know it's not an optimal solution but it's better than a jittery movie.

Hi, I'm fairly new to this kvcd templates stuff. But first I did like to say thanks to kwag for the great templates after experimenting and playing around with it the past week or so!

Anyways I also encountered these skipping problems on my Philips DVD 931/691 Player with the templates. It also couldn't play CDs encoded with kvcdx3 mpeg1/mpeg2 movies. However after updating the firmware of my DVD player, it solved the skipping problems and I also noticed it seems to play the kvcdx3 templates now too. So I guess maybe you could try that too?

Good to know. I have been waiting to upgrade the firware of my DVDR890 because of all the problems some people had in upgrading. Anyone would know if that might solve the issue. I am on 11h.

Update the player's firmware? Okay, how do I go about doing that? In my case, a Pioneer DV-533.

I also noticed that the freezing/skipping doesn't always occur in the exact same spot, but it does seem to be in the same scenes.

I'm not really too sure with standalone DVD players but i think i should say be warned though that you do this at your own risk

Well, I guess I'll chime in.

I found that I often had this problem and nearly went nuts trying all kinds of settings to fix it. In the end, the problem dissappeared when I started using my new burner. My old burner was a Sony with a max burn speed of 4X. I also had trouble with various media until I got my new burner.

BTW, my new burner has a max burn speed of 30X but I still only burn at 4X.

Just in case you have an old burner, you could try a friend's VCD to see if it has the same problem.
