I'm having some trouble converting video from my Sony MiniDV Camcorder to KVCD.

Using the KVCDx3 template, and the latest "optimal script", the resulting video looks great, EXCEPT when the camera pans the video gets very jerky looking. It's not perfect on the original DV-AVI file, but encoding to KVCD using the default settings makes it MUCH worse!
It's a short video (40 minutes), so I was able to encode at CQ 100, max bitrate of 2500.

I'm going to try a few things today - first will be to increase the Max Bitrate as high as possible.

Some general questions:

For NTSC MiniDV source, should I:

encode to 29.97 or 23.97?
Use a GOP of 24 or 30?
Field first A or B?
Interlace or non-interlace?
Do I need to telecide/decimate?
Do I need to do a 3:2 pulldown?
I'll test this myself, but in your opinion is it better to try a Max Bitrate of 5000 and a CQ of 70 or a Max Bitrate of 2500 and a CQ of 100?

Thanks in advance,
Icarus

Hi Icarus,

You have to encode at 29.97. Your camera records at 29.97 interlaced video. Try a GOP of 30. Not sure about the field order, but TMPEG shoult determine that automatically. If it doesn't, read "Selecting the correct field order:" here: http://www.inmatrix.com/articles/ivtc1.shtml
You can't IVTC (Inverse Telcine), because your source was not telecined. So that rules out Telecide/Decimate, an also 3:2 pulldown.
If you like adventures , and you want to "try" encoding 24fps , read here: http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic....er=asc&start=0

Thanks Kwag!

I tried a GOP of 30 but the motion is still very jerky when the camera pans quickly.

I think I may need to increase the bitrate, although I never had these problems encoding TV captures.

Thanks again,
Icarus
