Problems converting XviD to VCD

I tried to convert the latest xvid downloads ,(such as the xvid formats used in phone booth) and I can't convert them to VCD's I've used EVERY program imaginable, the ONLY program that worked to extract and convert the Fraunhofer IIS Mpeg Layer-3 audio from the xvid to a wave file was GOLDWAVE ver.5 (previous versions don't work), my problem now is which prog can do the conversion of the video to a VCD readable mpeg, I tried a bunch and avi2vcd was the only one that accepted the conversion, but it outputed the mpeg to an upside down picture, and somewhat stretched, does anyone know which program can handle the conversion from Xvid MPEG-4 to a VCD usable mpeg? TMPGEnc won't load it, I get a whole bunch of error messages when I tried to load these type of encoded XviD's.

Did you just try to open it in VirtualDub and frameserve TMPEGEnc for the encoding ?

MenderOne 05-18-2003 12:03 PM

Dial , i checked the webpage for virtual regarding frameserving, and it speaks of how to do it, but tells you how to do it in terms as if one already knows how to start virtual dubb in frameserver mode, it was kinda vague as i don't know how to star it in frameserver mode, nor did it say how to, somebody please explain how to do this.

Dialhot 05-18-2003 12:12 PM

Very simple. In two operations :

1/ configuring the frameserver (needed only the first time)

Launch "auxsetup.exe" (it is in the same directory as virtualdub), choose "install handler" and then "ok".

2/ launching the frameserver

Open virtual dub, load your video. Then go to "File" menu, select "Start frameserver". Give a name for the frameserving file (ex: file.vdr). Open TMPGEnc and give as video source the path to "file.vdr".

Phil, pardon my ignorance as i am trying to learn here, how do I configure the frameserver? ,P.S. i bet you'll probaly sigh over there
OH DAMN i guess i didn'T READ a thousand pardons!

Phil MUCH thanks for helpin me out here, gonna give that a shot , will get back to you with results once i try it , thanks again. :D :D :D

K , here's an update Phil, Thanks to you I was able to do the following with the XviD avi, I frame served the video from the original XviD avi file, and the decompressed audio wav file to TMPGEnc, TMPGEnc accepted the vid , (FINALLY) as well as the wav of the audio, then I selected to make a SVCD using the template, and it ouputted a very good quality SVCD mpg (Before this I made a VCD using the same process with TMPGEnc, but it produced an mpg with an unacceptable loss of quality, viewable, but with loss of sharpness, and some pixelization) . Now I'm stuck as what I am now trying to do ,(my player only reads vcd, so as you know, I have to use the header trick) I used the mpeg tools in TMPGEnc and tried different methods, used multiplex, as well as simple multiplex, BUT when I start it I get the following message from TMPEGEnc "Multiplexing sub-picture stream to system stream is not supported", Do you know of a way for me to make the SVCD that will produce an mpeg, that TMPEGEnc will accept for multiplexing for the header trick? (heck, or any way at all?)

P.S. I am using TMPEGEnc version 2.511, evaluation.

I don't understand : what do you try to multiplex ? I mean that for multiplexing you have to give a video stream ONLY (.m1v or .m2v) plus an audio stream ONLY (.mp2).

Following what you wrote I understand that you try to multiplex directly the mpeg. That is not possible.

You have to :
1/ demultiplex your SVCD mpeg. That gives you two files : a .m2v and a .mp2

2/ multiplex these two files into VCD non-standard.

See this guide http://www.vcdeasy.org/modules.php?n...es&id=VcdTrick , I am trying to do what's on that guide, as I have done it before , and it worked

MenderOne 05-19-2003 05:46 PM

I tried it the way you explained, and demultiplexed the SVCD MPG (The mpeg that was created by the frameserving) it gave me th audio and video as you stated in seperate file, I then refed the vid and audio and multiplexed, (VCD non standard) and the resulting mpeg was a green screen and audio breakup.

MenderOne 05-19-2003 05:55 PM

Mainly what I want is an SVCD mpg (which I already have, thanks to your help :D ) that I can use the header trick on.(This is the only thing left to finalize this project, that I have had a problem with in doing) In essence the header trick takes a MPEG2 's quality and retains it, all it does is changes the header to a MPEG 1 yet it retains the quality of the MPEG2. then the resulting mpeg can be burned, and read on a standalone DVD player that would'nt read an SVCD.

Did yopu read that on you PC ?

Excuse me but I don't think there is a player on PC that deals with "header tricks".

Make a try on your DVD player using a CDR-RW.

MenderOne 05-19-2003 07:08 PM

Believe it or not, I did , the previous headertrick mpg that I did reads on my pc as well as my dvd player, I have a HP 9500 series i cd burner and it read the header tricked mpg just fine, but just for the sake of verification, i will burn a sample of the mpg that showed green on a cdr-w and try it on my dvd player , get back to you in a few on the results.

I can't get VCD Easy to make an image, it tells me that the mpeg is unsupported , apparently when i used the method you described, the resulting multiplexed file is 480x480 , don't understand? (GOD how i wish there would be a simplified product that would properly convert these blasted XviD's to an SVCD which can be read by TMPEGEnc, when using the header trick, the one that worked previous to this one wasn't a XviD , the one that worked with the header trick source was already encoded as an SVCD, this XviD conversion is becoming a REAL headache)

MenderOne 05-20-2003 02:22 AM

Phil Guess what?

Phil, guess what? I am ecstatic! :D Remember the vcd mpg that I made ?, (not the SVCD one) Well , I still had the mpg on the drive and said "Oh the HELL with it, lemme check this one and do an image with VCD Easy as this mpg was the only one that it accepted, and to my SURPRISE, it did'nt look good on the pc quality wise , BUT... when I played it on my stand alone DVD it looked GREAT! Suffice it to say I would have never even been able to get that if it were not for your kindness and patience. I would just like to thank you for that as you explained to me about frame serving, where as no one else answered. THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH! :D :D :D

I don't see any problem : 480*480 is the normal resolution of a ntsc SVCD. Am I wrong ?

You are in USA, so I guess that you don't want to make a PAL SVCD :-)

Lol. You're welcome.

hey MenderOne,

You didn't mention whether you use AviSynth or not. If not then you should download and install Avisynth 2.08 Then you select the Xvid file with MovieStacker and it will create your script for you (just select SVCD to get the proper resolution to resize to). Then open the script in TMPGenc with ToK to get the right filesize. Extract the audio wave file with Virtual Dub or Goldwave and encode it to .mp2 with HeadAC3he and then mux with BBmpeg as a vcd and burn with VCDEasy.

sometimes the script has to be manually modified if the vid is split into two avi's.

Hey Ren, Thanks for the input , appreciate it, will try it :D
