Tha Brightness is a "+" made on the Luma, the Contrast is a "*" made on the diffrence between Luma_max and Luma_min, And the Gamma is an homogeneous "*" done on an elemental component (that can be the Luma, the Chroma or on of the three basics R,G or B).
