I have been doing my SVCD's at 480 x 480 but I am wondering if I should switch to 352 x 480?

as long, as used DVD2SVCD i did 480x576 , too
gives awesome quality, why should one reduce the resolution?
do it the other way, increase resolution with kvcdx3

believe me telemike my friend.
i use both
wait, i explain.
if the movie is too big...more than 120 minutes, 352x480.
if don't, 480x480.
then i don't know how i can vote.

Exactly the same for me.
It depends on the final CQ I obtain with each resolution.
I'd rather to have a lower reso but a CQ above 65 than the opposite.
So I start with KVCDx3 reso, and decrease it till I have a CQ that make me happy.

I always start off with KVCDx3, no matter what movie it is I'm going to try to encode. If I don't like the quality after calculating correct CQ, I just change the resolution to 352x480 and recalculate CQ.
Basically I only use 528x480 (First choice) and 352x480 (Second choice).
That's for one CDs. If the movie doesn't look very good, even at 352x480, then I go for two CDs at 528x480. But those are rare cases .

I wonder if 544 x 480 MPEG-2 would play ok? Hmm. Wonder how to add that to D2S?

Only a test can give you an aswer. If 544x480 is not, perhaps 528x480 will do (I'm not sure about 528... ?).

Two solution :
permanent one : modify the dvd2svcd ini. A little complex (ask Jorel )
non permanent : in "frameserver" tab, ask to "edit avs before encoding". When the encode time arrives, a windows pops up where you can edit the avs script that will be used and change the value on the line "bilinearresize" (or bicubicresize if you use this one).

Thanks-
I posted same polla t www.vcdhelp.com and CVD is winning over SVCD.....
CVD loses some sharpness for more bits per pixel and less disc space....plus if you do 48k instead of 44.1k audio it will go to dvd-r easier.........

hmm,
good question...
i prefer to do svcd's at 480x480,,
but if the flic warrants it, i choose 352x480,,,
i always have problems with subtitles when using dvd2svcd for cvd though....
for tv captures i use 352x480 cuz usually i'll archive three or four or more tv shows per dvd-r, so at half d1 i can mux to dvd or cvd or 352x480 svcd...

I always use 480x480... Partly because my player doesn't support CVD. I did try encoding at 352x480 once though, and thought it didn't look quite as good.

Kwag Y not 480x480 i happen to like that resolution better than 352x480, to me 480 is not to far of 528 in a lot cleaner n sharper.

Kwag... what is the reasoning behind skipping over 480? I don't necessarily disagree but I want to understand why. My feeling is that 480 shows a very visable quality gain over 352. However 528 does not always show a quality gain over 480. Is that in my head or is there a real gain?
It is probablly important to note that my only source for viewing has been a Sony 35" Trinitron (tube). I will not be going to any other source anytime soon.
The value of 480x480 is that on a Sony player it will make a nice VCD and it also satisfies players that only play SVCD.
Of couse the real issue is that I don't want to be wasting time with 480 if 352 is really the same. I am always ready to let science lead over my own eyes.

528x is better than 480x, just as 480x is better that 352x , but the main reason is that not all DVD players play 480x, but most (if not all!) play 352x, because 352x IS a valid DVD resolution and 480x is not.
And I am very happy with 352x480 KDVD encodes
