Hi there:

Fist at all I hope you all can understand my broken English.

Usually I pass my time trying to get my AVI's into a DVD and on a proper DVD format, so I did some tests with KDVD to get more than one film in every DVD.

I use CCE (2.67.00.09) with a CBR. All the tests I did learned me that a bitrate slightly over the AVI's bitrate is more than enough, so as normal I use bitrates between 2000 and 3000. With that I get usally 2 films in each DVD.

But I gave a try to KDVD encoding with TMPGEnc. The first thing to pay attention is that the encoding time is about four to five times more than using CCE. Doesn't matter if the quality is good and Mb are less enough.

I did 4 test, all of them on 720x576 (PAL). 2 with CCE (default GOP and standard matrix) with CBR 3000 and 2500 and 2 with KDVD (TMPGEnc) with CQ and VBR 300/5000 and 300/3000.

The results are as follow:

KDVD, CQ 90, Bitrate 300/5000 ---->13.623Kb superb quality
KDVD, CQ 70, Bitrate 300/3000 ---->11.487Kb bad no, worst with a lot of pixelization
CCE, CBR 3000 ----> 14.634Kb superb quality
CCE, CBR 2500 ----> 12.195Kb superb quality

As you can see the similar test on each program have similar results in Mb, but not in quality, and not to say on time needed for it.

Here are the links to the tests:

ed2k://|file|Peli.TMPGEnc.m2v|13949461|F12E9D18703AD4938D 743A318BA6DA53|/

Unfortunely I did not reach to work together CCE with a KDVD matrix. Every time I tested a "tiled" film was the only result (?), any sugestion Kwag?

I think a perfect marriage between CCE and KDVD GOP and matrix would be very profitable for everybody, is it not?

Hi Nomada,

CCE should work with KVCD's Q. Matrix
And for bitrates over 5Mbps, CCE is better than TMPEG, but only in MPEG-2
On low bitrates, <3,000, TMPEG in MPEG-1 just beats CCE in both MPEG-1 and MPEG-2. The big advantage of CCE over TMPEG is speed, but the big disadvantage is the price
You should try MainConcept encoder. It's even beter than CCE in MPEG-2 in high bitrates

Off course, I'm speaking about DVD, so it means MPEG-2. And not only is better on high bitrates, you can see my tests, they are 3000 as maximum.

Nomada

P.d.: I'll do again a new test with KDVD matrix and GOP in few days.

kwag,

Am I correct that MPEG-1 is only progressive?

If so, what to do for material which must stay interlaced and around 3000 bitrate?

uh, yeah, I didn't ask the proper question.

For low-mid bitrate you are suggesting TMPGEnc, correct?

acp will only do MPEG-1 progressive (durn) so that means ToK (with no batch capability, durn) should be used, correct?

I know, I know, my head is all fuzzy tonight.

Yes

If you want to do automatic prediction, and your target is MPEG-2, then you have no choice and you have to use ToK.
