KVCD Flashing/blocky in low detail areas with latest script?

Hi guys.

So I've been playing with kwag's latest script and am seeing some blockyness or flashing type thing happening in low detail areas, expecially on static images.

I've done a few 2 hour movies with TOK on 2 80min disks audio quality of 128kb and see similiar results on all of the encodes. I'm getting a CQ at around 79 or 80 which I think is good from what I read (sorry not used to TMGEnc yet, used CCE in the past)

The picture looks good at 704x??, but the artifacts can be seen. I have a big HDTV so could that be the problem?

Anyway to rid or reduce these.

I always have this problem, so I've just lived with it... it's not that distracting providing their not too ugly. Most of my encodes have them, even the most perfect ones. But on a HDTV you can even see the imperfections in commercial DVDs, so I doubt you're going to get rid of them completely, but you could try some Blockbuster(method="noise",variance=.3,seed=1) to hide some of them. :)

Do you think using a lower resolution would help. Same bits into less lines of resolution = less artifacts? Or would the picture be worse because of the lower resolution.

Currently I'm using 704x??? on 2 80 min. CDs

For two CDs, 704x480 should fit just about any movie. For one CD, go 528(44)x. Unless it's a low action movie, where you can go 704x on one CD. Lately, I put "Red Planet" on one CD at 704x480 and looks just :ole:
But "The Boondock Saints", had to go on one CD at 528x480. I always try file prediction on 704x480 for one CD. If I like the result, I encode. If not, I drop resolution to 528x480 and predict again. If it's still a no go, then the hell with 528x and I go full 704x480 but target two CDs. I know that will always work, unless I try to put "Ben Hur" or something like that, which will NOT work

thanks kwag your method sounds good I'll give it a try. Can you give mean any general tips on what CQ is good or bad. For example...what CQ at 704x480 on 1CD makes you say ahh I need to lower the resolution. And what CQ makes you decide you should try 2 CDs.

Know what I mean..

Thanks buddy.

Actually, I don't trust the CQ number. It's very non-linear, and varies with resolutions. I just play the sample predicted MPEG file, and if it looks bad (artifacts, etc.). I go to the next step.

AAArgh. That is it. I cannot wait any longer for KVCD to become THE global standard for standalone DVD players (it will I am sure very soon :D ) I'm going to trade my old Grundig to get a player that will play KVCDx3 tomorrow (it is the only format it doesn't play)!!

Well, if we keep making enough noise, maybe the big boys ( HELLO PANASONIC, HELLO PIONEER, HELLO RCA, HELLO SONY, etc. ) will eventually take note, and make their decoder firmware a little more KVCDexible (Yes, that was no typo  )
But then again, maybe they are already taking note, but just don't admit it 8) Have you ever wondered why the newer players just keep getting more compatible :?:
It seems that something! is already happening

Sure have Kwag. The last couple of (new) cheapies I saw at friends places and on holidays recently played everything I threw at them.

Being associated with this forum, might get my 10mins of fame after all. :P (thanks mate 8)
