Is it possible to use Kvcd Templates on an Mpeg file ?

I'm new to all this stuff..I'll admit that I hardly understand it all... here's my question..

As you may know; Casablanca was made in black and white in 1942..however.. Ted Turner had the film COLORIZED in 1989; it was shown once on TV.. then had a very limited release on VHS tape.

I found this very rare Video tape and recorded it with the Terripin VCD Recorder. The movie is now on 2 cds. (using the standard Mpeg 1, 1150 bitrate, 352 x 240)

I've extracted the Mpg file from the VCD Dat file, using VCDEasy's Mpeg Tools..

But, when I tried to join the 2 files together; TMpgEnc said that the files were ILLEGAL Mpeg files..and would not allow the files to be joined.

I then reencoded the files using the normal VCD TMpgEnc Template..TmpgEnc then allowed the files to be joined together.

Now..can this Mpeg file be used with a KVCD Template; OR will I have to RE-encode it to an AVI file ?

I'd love to be able to get this 141 minute movie onto one CD..any suggestions?

Thanks much!

you can use MpegDecoder to create a d2v file from your joined mpeg, so that you can load it in moviestacker and process like converting a dvd

MPEGDecoder is so buggy with MPEG1 files that it is nearly impossible to do KVCD with this.

You never obtain the correct frame number. And nothing said in the documentation to solve this problem really works.

I'm I the only one ?

Open this MPEG under VirtualDub and frameserve TMPGEnc.

Hi SinatraFan (you pinched my next username :( ). With that approach you will be reencoding twice and your mpeg will look like my emoticon above.

To reencode only once, I would go back to the original dat files. We need to evercome why Tmpgenc is not liking your files. Here is what i would try. In Tmpgenc, on each file, I would Simple Demux. If that works, use Simple Remux (non-standard VCD mode). this should restore both files to be recognisable by Tmpgenc. Then use your Mpeg tools to join. If that fails use vcdgear to create proper mpegs from your Dat, then join. Get it here:
http://www.vcdgear.com/

If you want to get it on 1 CD you are going to have to reencode using the techniques in the guides here. Quality will suffer with reecoding. Use Kane's suggestion in Avisynth or Vdub and follow the guides. This only requires one reencode not two.

If I remember well, VCDEasy uses VCDGear to do VCD extraction.

(remember that VCDEasy if "only" a frontend for other tools).

Thank ya'll for your replies...welll... what I'm doing may solve the problem..then again.. it may not.. we'll have to see~!

I took the original DAT files, and re-encoded 'em into 2 Divx Avi files..which I'm gonna join together using Virtual Dub..now..I'm gonna put that AVI file through Fitcd; (if I can understand the directions.. ) to determine what is the proper CQ setting.. then use one of the KVCD templates to encode the AVI down to a proper size to make the 1 hour 41 minute movie fit on one CD..

After all of these procedures; do you think it's gonna work ? :?

The 2d AVI file is almost finished encoding.. I'll let you know in a few hours how this all turned out.. Thanks Again ~ !

SinatraFan,

When you extracted the .dat files did you choose to filter mpeg2 frames? That might be the reason for the error in TMGEnc

SinatraFan 06-18-2003 02:48 PM

Hi~ Wellll..that didn't quite work out as planned...rats ! :x I scrapped everything..I'm starting over from scratch..starting from the DAT files.. hmmm.. "filter mpg2 frames" ? How is this accomplished ? I used VCDEasy to extract Mpeg files from the DAT files.. there is no setting, to my knowledge; in VCDEasy that allows any filters to be applied.

My thought is that these extracted files didn't have the proper mpeg header on 'em.. that's WHY I couldn't merge 'em in TmpgEnc. Which is why I had to re-encode 'em.

I did try to encode the first mpeg file into UNcompressed AVI. but; after only a minute..I had almost 2 GIGS of Avi file..I realised that the final file is gonna be HUMONGOUS..so.. I stopped it.

I found a software called FILE MERGER..I'm presently re-encoding the 2d mpeg file because I wanted to edit the file (shave off 44 seconds at the beginning of the file, so that it will seamlessly blend in with the ending of the 1st mpeg file) then, I'll try to merge the 2 mpeg files together..

After the 2 mpeg files are merged together.. should I try to re-encode 'em into Divx ? Then..encode 'em with the kvcd Template ?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.. Thanks ~ :)

I don't use VCDGear so I don't know, but download "ISO buster" and load up the disk image.

Navigate to the MPEG folder and right click on the .dat file. Choose extract, but filter mpeg 2 frames. Let me know if that helps. I've used this method and joined to SVCE files successfully in TMGEnc

SinatraFan 06-18-2003 03:08 PM

Cool !..since i'm in the middle of the encode to the edited mpeg file at the moment.. I'll try ISO Buster out after the encode gets done.. Thanks for the suggestion ~!
