KVCD: Yet more aspect ratio problems...
 

Well like JoJo I'm having a hell of a time with the "anamorphic" issue.

When I use a real DVD that is anamophic, my player adapts for my physical apect ratio. My consumer DVD players do the same.

Doing what kwag suggested on setting both source & output aspect to 16x9 dosen't seem to have worked for me as I now have lots of tall skinny people, even the fat ones.

Anyway for Kwag or anyone with the info; Kwag mentions the use of Avisynth and a proggie called FitCD. I have Dl'd these and put them on my system, but I do not understand how to use them :? nor do I understand how these will help me tell TMPGenc how to set the aspect ratios correctly. :? :cry:

Any and all help is appreciated.

I haven't done my homework on aspect ratios but this is what works for me with dvd rips:

I select the .d2v file in FitCD and produce the .AVS file-
then load the .AVS into TMPGEnc and set source aspect ratio to 1:1 VGA/video arrange- full screen keep aspect ratio and output ratio to 4:3 525 line NTSC

If things don't look right in the TMPG preview window then I'll stop the encoding and check it out in WinDVD- sometimes I have to uncheck "anamorphic" in FitCD and start over.

I've done 2 movies that had this problem and I've found that setting it to 2.11/1 as aspect ratio in TMPEG is a lot like it. I notice almost no difference. Hope this helps.

open d2v file in FitCD, if anamorphic is automatically checked when you open the d2v file, then make sure it is also checked on the bottom next to your destination resolution. Open the avs script in TMPGEnc, load your template, click File, then priview and make sure everything looks ok. If it doesn't look ok then select a different source aspect ratio in the advanced tab until the preview looks ok.

My main problem that I was having with anamorphics was that I was cutting the resolution to 352x480.

In this mode, not all players prperly respect anamorphic encoding.

I was even messing with IFO files to force the modes. Most software DVD players were very accomodating to what I was doing but my very compatible Pioneer was not too happy.

Basically my new rule is ... Full D1, yes do anamorphic.
Half D1, make sure output is at 4:3 or it won't be universal .....

Now I see what you mean about the wrong aspect ratio because I encoded a movie that FitCD said was anamorphic but I didn't believe it so I unchecked anamorphic and encoded it so that it would fill up the whole screen. When I watched it on my tv everything was stretched vertically- skinny people with coneheads :lol:

So as long as I don't second guess FitCD's settings and select 1:1 vga as source aspect and 4:3 as target aspect in TMPGEnc then it works.

Well, if the only reason you were using FitCD was to translate anamorphic to non, and weren't trying to chage resolution use could have used the D2V directly and set incomming and outgoing aspects to 16:9. That should have worked too. But if you're dropping resolution, yeah, output to 4:3 ....
