DVD2AVI: switching back and forth from NTSC to Film
 

I'm trying to back up my sex in the city episodes and in DVD2AVI and the video type keeps switching back and forth from NTSC to Film and Frame type from interlaced to progressive. It remains a constant 23.976 frame per second and after 15 minutes of preview the film percentage is up to 86%. Wierd thing is that it seems to switch to NTSC and back to FILM on every scene change.

How should I encode this? Forced film? Any special filters with the MA script? and if so where do I put them in the script?

Hi audi2honda,

I think you're going to have a problem there. What you are describing, seems that "Sex in the City" is filmed in a mix of FILM and VIDEO.
If this is the case, your best bet is to use Telecide and Decimate functions, and encode at 29.97fps. Check the docs on those two functions for the correct values to use on "Hybrid" material.

I don't actually watch Sex in the City... but the question will apply to other material.

If you have a capture of Sex in the City that is 29.97 NTSC Interlaced, would you still use the Telecide and Decimate funcations and then encode 29.97?

Because it was a capture it would only show NTSC 29.97 in DVD2AVI. Is it necessary to even use the functions? Would FieldDeinterlace be sufficient?

I'm pretty sure audi2honda's episodes are on DVD, because that "Hybrid" pattern wouldn't show if it was a TV capture. Then, as you say, a plain deinterlace would be the cure :)

Yea my episodes are on DVD. I'll read up on those functions you told me about. Ok I think I've got it and want to give it a try, but does it matter where in the MA script I put telecide and decimate? before or after the asharp and undot stuff?

also, should I use 'swap field order' or 'forced film' in dvd2avi?

Don't use "Force FILM" in DVD2AVI :!:
That's the job of telecide and decimate :)
You put both lines right after your "mpeg2source()" line

Well I guess last night I was celebrating the prediction, and I had a couple of beers. So if I had been "IN" the city, I would have had sex "IN" the city, "AND" I wouldn't have been encoding 8O :P 8) :mrgreen:

One last question. telecide and decimate removed the combing like a charm and the sample encode looks great.

But here's my question...

DVD2AVI created the project at 29fps. I noticed in the preview that these episodes are about 70-80% film and 20-30% video, so I assume most of the material is 23fps or can you have 29fps film? Anyway I used decimate to convert it all down to 23fps, but my question is won't this throw off my audio sync when I mux?

If DVD2AVI stripped the audio at 29fps and I converted it to 23fps the audio won't match up will it? How do I make it sync up again.

I haven't tried yet, but I'm anticipating this problem.. :?: :?:

What if my source says FILM throughout (no switching b/t film and ntsc), but the frame type keeps switching from progressive to interlaced? I've been doing Force Film on that and encoding at 23.976 and haven't noticed any problems, but was just wondering if this was the right way to do it.

Then I would uncheck "Force FILM" and stick to using Telecide() and Decimate().

Thanks Kwag. Just wondering why Telecide() and Decimate() aren't included in MovieStacker? Would you recommend using FieldDeinterlace() or TomsMoComp() instead?

Thanks again Kwag, just trying to learn what all those different de-interlacing options in MStacker are used for. Sorry if this is a FAQ but when would you use either one?

I usually add the decomb.dll to the script and then put

telecide()
decimate(mode=1, threshold=50)

then encode at 29.97 fps

That's when you have a FILM source which flips between progressive and interlaced, right? Just wondering, what do those changes in decimate from default mean/do? Thanks.

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead but I am having a similiar problem with the dvd "Apsen Extreme".

It switches from Film 98% Progressive, to NTSC 4% Interlaced randomly throughout the movie. Frame rate stays at 23.976

So the way I understand it the best way to fix this is by doing the following.


Set DVD2AVI to No Force Film.

And then using Decomb in my avs script by adding the following lines

telecide()
decimate(mode=1, threshold=50)

And then encode at 29.97 fps.
