Why are the DivX encodes so flawed?

There is no question that DivX has this awsome following and in most places (ah.. hem!... Doom9 forums) there is constant talk about how it is the most superior format. :o

I have created literally hundreds of MPEG1 files using just about every possible combination of settings from this site. Never once have I had quality issues that I did not expect (i.e. low bitrate = visable artifacts). I also have never had audio sync problems that I was not able to correct easily). :D

However, 75% of the DivX files I have seen floating around have very obvious artifacts or encoder glitches in the video stream. Nice clean picture in areas and then a quick flash of green blocks or a really bad set of artifacts on movement for a second or two. Also, many of the files seem to have custom framerates. Why use 24.7 or some other weird number? Additionally there is fading audio sync issues in many clips. Things start fine and then fade out. Or things are a bit fast and slide to a bit slow by the end. :?

If the DivX process is so great why are the end results so weak? On top of that you are stuck with some hack job set top box ordered off the Internet or playing on your PC only.

Isn't there anyway to just get ride of DivX and get everyone on board with KVCD3?

Why are the DivX encodes so flawed?

Grantman my friend,
for the first time i see someone that have the same opinion like me.
:)
i have only one divx make with vidomi and ChickenMan tutorial.
my friends ever send me divx to see but when they see my kvcds:
wow...copy one for me please.

only my opinion about divx:
colors not real, red colors with extreme magenta, blocks,
freeze some pcs, more blocks, hard to play on some machines.
and don't see on tv...the most boring part...
ok,some news player can(so hard) play but will coming
news players for each new divx encoder, believe me.
i never liked divx, excuse me all friends that like, the results bore me!

i copy monsters sa kvcd to one pc 200mmx and it play great :!:

who knows one divx that play in one 200mmx and in dvd player?

ps:
more blocks(on divx)

hi Grantman..

I think that there are a LOT of peoples out there that are just to inexperienced
when they make divX encodes. You may have gotten many of those that
peoples claimed was pretty good, and when YOU got it, that pretty good
was not true. ..the eye of the beholder.

I've had my share of doing divX encodes. And, I've even reversed what
I said and felt about it (they such, poor qulaity.. yada, yada) but after I
got MY hands wet w/ divX and made a few of those "blocky" encodes, I
slowly learned how to cook a little w/ divX. One time, I did the first VOB
of the Movie, "Get Karter" and I REALLY liked the quality. Though, it was
150mb for a 21 minute @ 800x378 clip. I don't know if that's good or bad,
for it's specs and things (hope it's concidered good) But I liked it just the
same. So, I figured (150 * 3) = 450mb for an Hours worth. Well, I was
experimenting. Anyways.. There are alot of people that are just pumping
out a LOT of cheap encodes JUST to squeeze the whole movie for a D/L.

Anyways.. my two cents worth.

I've done a couple of MPEG-4 encodes with DivX AND XviD. If you target a movie to say fit in 700MB, and you encode MPEG-4 and KVCD for this target, there's hardly any difference in regular scenes. However :!:, on low bitrate scenes, the MPEG-4 REALLY does a good job, but on high bitrates compared to MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, it sux big wind
So really, overall quality with the MA scripts we've done and GOP Matrix, etc, I really like KVCDs far better. Not to mention the fact that it plays in almost every DVD player, but MPEG-4, you can count standalone players with one hand :!:
Plus you need constant firmware updates, because the encoders are in a continuous change of flux all the time. Not so for MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 ;)

1-CD DivX encodes of old style cartoons, if well done, *can* be much better than 1-CD kvcd encodes. If you go for 2 Cds there's no difference (if both are well done). But, I've seen 2-Cd DivX encodes that were awful.

I agree that a 90% of people cutting a DivX/XVID or other MPEG4 movies doing a garbage work. Picture stays realy bad, even if 2h movie is put on 2 CD, and that's realy sad.
In my opinion one of the main reature of PC A/V formats is their flexibility. Of course you cannot play them on standalone player (in most cases), but their ofer a meny advantages in backuping video and audio. For example: I can say that i will abandom my favore mix (DivX for video, OGG for audio, MKV for container), if anybody can offer mi a possibility to put 2h movie in 528x300 (~16:9), with 6ch audio and two subs on 1CD, using KVCD (not KDVD) posibilities :) I'm waiting for offerts ;)
PS: Don't get me wrong, KVCD have make very good impression on me. Few troubles in encoding (I'm still fighting ;)), but the quality ... mmm, yummy :). One minus for audio, only ProLogic with KVCD :(
