KVCD: Anime/Cartoon GOP setting?

Which GOP is the correct one for PAL

1-12-2-1-24

or

1-12-2-1-25

or

1-12-2-1-25

:?: :?: :?:

kwag 07-04-2003 04:32 PM

Hi Bchteam,

For PAL, use 1-12-2-1-25
But that's for regular films :!:
For (old) Cartoons/Animations use 1-12-2-1-15 or even 1-12-2-1-12

No those are new computer generated movies. Use the long GOP (24 NTSCFilm, 25 PAL, 30 NTSC ).

Ahh :!:, you are old jorel , and I am getting there too 8O :)
For those, use the short GOPs. 12 NTSCFilm, 12-15 PAL , 18 NTSC ;)

I opened this Thread because I had some Problems.

I encoded Animatrix with the 1-12-2-1-12 GOP and the picture was jittering on the TV. After that, I thought, it has to be something wrong with the GOP, but then I took a look on the script and recognized, that I've added the Line "Fielddeinterlace()" by mistake, because Animatrix isn't interlaced.

So my question is:

Did the GOP or "Fielddeinterlace" caused the jittering ???

ovg64 07-05-2003 07:15 AM

Had the same problem in the past Bchteam, and is i had to give you an answer i say it was the gop. :)

Bchteam 07-05-2003 07:20 AM

Hello Ovg64,

Which Standalone Player do you have... :?:

A GOP of 12 shouldn't be a problem with ANY player :!:

@Bchteam,

Try Bob() instead of "Fielddeinterlace".

Well i had a problem when i used a gop of 15 which i think is the run one
for NTSC and sence i didn't use Fielddeterlace.

@ Kwag

I think you didn't understand what I mean

I added "Fielddeinterlace" inadvertently.

It happened by mistake, because Animatrix isn't interlaced.

And that's why I asked, whether "Fielddeinterlace" screwed the whole thing up and and caused the jittering...

But another Question:

Do I actually need the 1-12-2-1-12 GOP for Animatrix, which is partially computer generated and partially (new) Cartoon :?:

Only you can tell :)
Make a small clip with a GOP of 12 and another with 25 and see how they compare

hi Bchteam..

I think I understand or know what you are refering to, when you say that
you experienced "jittering" in your final play.

But, did you experience this when you SW played it, or did you, when you
burned to a test CDR ?? ??

I asked the above question because when I play w/ PDVD, sometimes, if
not most of the time, when I encode to an .M2V file, and play in PDVD,
it will jitter or jerk during play. It seems to happend ONLY when I select
the .M2V encode and use an 23.976 w/ 3:2 Pulldown selected in TMPG :!:
But, when I selected straight 23.976 but this time, w/ the 3:2 Pulldown
selected, whenever I play inside PDVD, it is fluid.
.
.
For some strange reason, TMPG does not like to encode accurately, .M2V
files when 23.976 w/ 3:2 Pulldown are selected. At least in my
experience anyways.

I don't know what your process is, "accurately" but if your process is anything
like the above, then that could also be a factor (if not, the cause) of your
"jitter" issues.
.
.
I can't see why a GOP change would cause jitter though. I mean, you can
try all sorts of crazy GOP settings, and encode each one of them, but you
shouldn't get any "jittering" :!:

If you are encoding to an MPEG-1, and you are selecting in some way,
a 3:2 pulldown (perhaps w/ Pulldown.exe) THAT could be your "jitter" issue
right there. MPEG-1 does not have a flag for 3:2 pulldown (AFAIK) Only
MPEG-2 does.

* Are you projects MPEG-1, or MPEG-2 ??

FieldDeinterlace could have also caused your "jitter" too, cause it is deleting
a frame :!: if you are encoding to 23.976 fps :!: instead of 29.970 fps.
When you de-Interlace, you should always be doing it at a frame rate of
29.970 fps :!: and nothing less, unless you want issues.

Hope that helps some.

After some tests, I can say that it has nothing to do with my Standalone and likely nothing with the GOP. I also removed "Fielddeinterlace()" and the problems are still there

I also checked the Source Material, but I couldn't find anything.

I suspect the filters in the script...

I made some pictures and one 3,4 MB Sample Clip:

http://www.digitalfaq.com/archives/error.gif

http://www.digitalfaq.com/archives/error.gif

http://www.digitalfaq.com/archives/error.gif

http://www.digitalfaq.com/archives/error.gif

And here's the Sample Clip (1-12-2-1-12 GOP, NO "Fielddeinterlace()", 528x480) :

http://home.arcor.de/bchteam/Samples...trixSample.mpg

Look especially at scene, when the boy is falling from the roof. He's flashing and ghosting (Picture One) !!!

It's the first time, that I have those kind of problems.

Please help me....

kwag 07-06-2003 03:47 AM

Hi Bchteam,

The clip looks great, except for those weird parts where you can see the "Ghosting"
Have you checked your original source through those frames in Vdub :?:

-kwag

Bchteam 07-06-2003 04:36 AM

You are right the clip looks great...

And of course I checked the source Frames with Virtual Dub, but it has no Bad Frames like that...

That seems very strange...

:?: :?: :?:

Bchteam 07-06-2003 04:58 AM

I think I found the Problem... It must be a Filter.

I made a test encode straight from the DVD2AVI Project (.d2v) without any script, and the clip was fine. No Ghosting at all.

I think it has something to do with the Motion Adaptive Part of the script.

But which Filter could be the mischief maker... :?:
