im leaning towards the compaq because of the low price and that i have alot of components laying around my house i need to know if it would make a significant difference in encoding time if i got the compaq over the two dells i am going to use this computer to encode movies into kvcds i need to know how fast the machines will encode an average movie

The 2.4 will be faster. I have a hyperthreaded P4 processor and in my benchmarks hyperthreading increases my encode time by 30% all other things being equal.

Whatever you do don't get the P4 2.2. You said it has 128K L2 Cache so it must be a celeron.
