DVD2SVCD: high quality KSVCDs on 1x CDR80 disc ?
OK,
I've asked for help before but didn't get response so i try again. So far I've made 4 well playing SVCD's, all on 2 CDR 80 discs. 3 with DVDx and 1 with DVD2SVCD (standard SVCD template). My goal is to make high quality KSVCD's on 1x CDR80 disc. Current project is "OneHourPhoto" which is approx. 1:30 hour movie. Now I have read tons of forum posts (DVDRhelp / doom9 / kvcdnet, etc) and read lot's of guides and I think I understand it pretty much but after the first good result in DVD2SVCD I ran into lots of problems. First was "VCDXBuild failed to create a bin/cue file!" (??) and now it seems that TMPEG is constantly crashing because when I check my PC each morning the WinXP login screen is there and I get error message (english translated - something like "system has recovered from a severe error and had to be closed down"). Looking at the logfile (below) I think TMPG crashes when starting the actual video encoding (so after the "analyzing" part of the 2-pass VBR). I have special dvd2svcd.ini and matrices file from this forum and use the standard SVCD PAL res of 480x576 (for better compatibility with Cyberhome player). I've tested lots of settings (CQ vs 2-pass VBR, which I am using now), PBC chapters, no chapters, fixed chapters. SVCD subtitles vs permanent (using now), 128 - 160 and 192 kbps (using now) for audio. I've shut down my virus scanner (Norton). I have no characters in my output path which are known to cause problems (using "123[], etc" could do that I've read somewhere). I use TMPG 2.59.47.155 + DVD2SVCD 1.1.3 build 2. My present DVD2SVCD log file is below. I realy hope someone can point me in the right direction...... If you are making a KVCD, don't use 2-pass VBR method but CQ method, starting from a CQ value a 70.
|
Also, get rid of TMPG 2.59.47.155 :!:
Use either 2.58, of versions higher than 2.59. -kwag |
Thanks Kwag/Dialhot.
I figured that changing Tmpg was one option I had to try. What about DVD2SVCD 1.1.3. build 2 -> I've read somewhere (Jorel ?) that this version wasn't good together with any version of TMPEG (?). Should I change to 1.1.2 ? Why change to CQ instead of 2-pass VBR ? Isn't VBR more efficiënt when putting movies on only 1 disc ? I know there have been discussions before but want to know the latest insight :-). Any remarks as to my DVD2SVCD.ini. Kwag, is the script OK (bottom part of ini file)..........? PS: sorry about the long text lines. Don't know how that happened.. |

The only "little" difficulty is that you have to use a file prediction size method in order to find the correct CQ before launching the encoding. But DVD2SVCD do it very well. Quote:
Before switching to MA script (see "optimal script" forum) I used to have quite the same script you have but with Lanczosresize and mergeluma(blur(0.2)). The result is a lot sharper. |
Thanks Dialhot for your fast reply.
What do you advise, copy "Lanczosresize and mergeluma(blur(0.2))" into my script/ini (where do I copy exactly ?) or go for the optimal script ? I have both avisynt 2.08 and 2.5n (I think). Still not quite sure why TMPEG crashes but I'll try using a different version anyway (PS: TMPEG also crashes when I start it myself instead of using DVD2SVCD).. |
I changed the Avisynth section in my DVD2SVCD.ini file (according to the last optimal 2.0x Avisynth script). Now I have:
[AVISYNTH_STMedian from Kwag] 0=LoadPlugin(!Legalclip.dll) 1=Legalclip() 2=LoadPlugin(!Unfilter.dll) 3=Unfilter(^Horizontal,^Vertical) 4=Loadplugin(!GripFit_preview.dll) 5=GripCrop(^Width,^High) 6=GripSize(resizer="BicubicResize") 7=LoadPlugin(!STMedianFilter.dll) 8=STMedianFilter(8, 32, 0, 0, 8, 32) 9=temporalsmoother(1,2) 10=mergechroma(blur(1.50)) 11=mergeluma(blur(0.2)) 12=GripBorders() 13=Legalclip() !Legalclip.dll=C:\Program Files\DVD2SVCD\Filters\Legalclip.dll !GripFit_preview.dll=C:\Program Files\DVD2SVCD\Filters\GripFit_preview.dll ^Width=480 ^High=576 !STMedianFilter.dll=C:\Program Files\DVD2SVCD\Filters\STMedianFilter.dll !Unfilter.dll=C:\Program Files\DVD2SVCD\Filters\UnFilter.dll ^Horizontal=50 ^Vertical=50 The differences are: 8=STMedianFilter(8, 32, 0, 0, 8, 32) i.p.v. (10, 50, 0, 0, 10, 50) 11=mergeluma(blur(0.2)) instead of 11=mergeluma(blur(0.3)) Further I see that I had a different order of the script entries so I changed those as well according to the optimal script posting. Why is "legal clip" entered twice in the optimal script (both in the beginning as in the end) ? Can we also use Avisynth 2.5 in DVD2SVCD ? Looking forward to your reply........ |
My suggestion : stay where you are till it works. Just modify the script for a sharper picture but solve your problem with tmpgenc first.
Then you can move to avs2.52 and the new MA script (I'll can give you the correct dvd2svcd.ini for this if you want). |
Great,
Thanks DialHot. I realy appreciate your great help :D You are "the man" ! I'll probably try it tonite (Central European Time - The Netherlands...:-)) and get back to you as soon as possible... |
@ all
i as wrote here in dvd2svcd thread, the version 113b2 was giving lots of problems for me and for many users in d9 too. it was between april to june...more or less in this time. you can find in d9 forum lots of "breaks" with 113b2 version. you can see that 113b2 works a bit different from 112 version too. i don't know the reason but could be avisynth 251 with ffvfw or the tmpgenc or some in the d2s program and i post something in d9 about this and lots more users there did the same, one with different problem from other. the time pass and new versions came and now with avisynth 252 without ffvfw, new tmpgenc2513 and dvd2svcd113b3beta7 my problems gone away. this version is found only in this link, not in download page. you can download the 113b3beta7 in the link and read some about "crashes" and reason for changes: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=51096 after change to this versions my problems dissapear. thanks  |
Thanks Jorel for your input....
The link for downloading the beta 7 version of DVD2SVCD doesn't work. I'll start with another version of TMPG instead. If that does'nt do the job I go look for DVD2SVCD Beta 7. I'm sure anxious to post my first good result (with pictures to "proof" it... :) ). |
Oh Oh :( ,
I'm using TMPG 2.513 now and thought I start with an MPEG-1 352x288 25fps CQ 100 endode. I've selected permanent subtitles but when encoding in TMPEG (now running) the subtitles are not centered properly and the lines run out of the screen on the right side and continue on the left !? I am affraid this won't come out right (or will it ?). What could cause this (I didn't though position or size settings for subs at all) ? |
Quote:
i download it now again only to test the link and it's working. don't know the reason but sometimes the link fail, try again see, under this link: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=51096 have this another link to download... dvd2svcd 1.1.3 build 3 beta 7 hint: don't use "right click and save as" just click or it don't came! use the normal "left click" in the link without download managers. ps: very beautiful avatar Paulus! please, use the enter key in the middle of your phrases or the posts show a width with very large size.  |
More Oh Oh's :( ,
My MPEG 1 encode also crashes with TMPG 2.513. It seems I "beep"ed up my computer maybe with all these progs I've downloaded and tried  I am going to try the beta 7 now and if that fails I'm giving up for a couple of weeks because I'm realy getting sick of it (sorry for my not so optimistic state of mind). PS: thanks for the compliment on the Avatar. I have some more very nice movie related ones, unfortunately most of them to big filesize to use them on the forum...... |
And again forgot to press ENTER, sorry..........

Hello Dialhot,
Memory problems -> "Tell me about it". I am sorry to have wasted your time somewhat. Turns out Memm problems were the cause of my crashed with TMPEG. I have 512 Mb of TwinMos DDR in my Athlon XP 1800. But as the comp is overclocked to Athlon XP 2600 I had memory failure (only in TMPEG by the way). MEMMTEST 86 confirmed my problems. I tuned the PC down a bit (to XP 2400) and I have no problems anymore in TMPEG. My first CDR has just finished and I'm going to check in 5 minutes in my Cyberhome stand alone. Will get back to you with pics (I sure hope this one runs on my Cyberhome, I burned the CDRW at 8 speed - slowest - so should be OK. I'm very interested in your DVD2SVCD ini file with Avisynth 2.5 filters (I have ALL 2.5 filters I think so should be OK :D ). Keep posted ........ |
I'm glad you manage to make your first KVCD :-) .
For the ini file, I just answer to the same question there : http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1478&start=64 |
"Praise The Lord" I have my first working KSVCD on 1xCDR80 !!
I'm running it again tonight because I can improve the quality a little more, but ít's already great on the TV (16:9). By the way Dialhot,
I've pasted your script (from the link) to (the bottom of) my KVCD-LBR.ini but no "adaptive filter" in the frameserver tab. I thought it had to be pasted in my DVD2SVCD.ini (??). Not in KVCD-LBR.ini. Should there be "load" entry lines in the script ? Also, I have avisynth 2.08 installed now (I think ? How can you check ?). How do I change to 2.5n ? Please let me know so I can use it as soon as possible :) . |
