Tip for encoding while you're away from home

I've been doing this for a while, and a collegue who also let's his computer work while he's away thought I should share this with others. Some of you may know this already others might get some inspiration from it.

If you have a reasonably fast internet connection you can download and install a small program called VNC: http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/. It makes it possible to remote control your PC from any computer (using a password) over the internet. It's abit slow but it works.

I leave home while a movie is encoding, and after a few hours I log in to my home computer to see how big the file has become. If it came out too big or too small I just change the CQ or upper bitrate in TMPEGenc and start a new encoding. With a bit of luck I have the best possible filesize ready when I return home.

I love VNC. I've been using it for over a year. I can even log in from a different OS and see my Windows XP screen in a remote Linux box ( Or FreeBSD, NetBSD ) running X.
It's really cool. It's like PCAnywhere, but multi-platform.

dr_N,

i agree witcha, login in to the home pc to check on encodes/downloadz, etc,,is great. Question for you though:

at work we use terminal server and im used to using pcanywhere currently. I tried vnc about two years ago, but maybe it was an earlier version or just my rig back then , but i found it buggy and harder to setup than pcanywhere.
The only problem with pcanywhere is the cost now. services like ImInTouch (which lets you control or use say, your email program from your pc-but no GUI) or gotomypc , which charge a monthly subscription fee, go through their companies' servers.

How much better is vnc these days in ease of use, bug free, security, etc?

To be honest with you, I'm not certain how secure it is. I've checked my (ZoneAlarm) firewall a few times after a day off and it doesn't give any worrying warnings, but I'm just not too familiar with security in general.
Other more knowledgable people could possibly respond to the security issue.

I found it extremely user friendly: install the server, set a password and you can login from anywhere you've installed the small client. I haven't encountered any bugs so far.

How do you tell ZoneAlarm to allow VNC to access your PC, when you try to connect remotely?

With everyone having broadband now, Security should be an issue. Asside from using STRONG passwords (not dictionary words, birthday, etc.) you can always tunnel VNC through a SSH connection There is an excellent article on tunneling almost any network service via ssh at http://www.vandyke.com/solutions/tun...g_with_ssh.pdf. Also another simple thing to do, is only run the server when you need to access your machine remotely. If you have anymore questions regarding the Security of vnc or how to set up a secure vnc connection please reply and I'll start a thread in the off-topic section.

Cheers

PS There are also versions vnc (tightvnc comes to mind) that have highly optimized the data compression so that vnc is useable even on dialup connections.

Do you need a dedicated IP address for your home PC in order to connect to it with a VNC viewer?

I'm sorry, I just don't remember. I guess it was just allowing the server to run.
