Stop using this guide. Every newbies using it has this problem and none of the "guru" of the forum (that don't use it either) never found the reason. For sure that is not you the guilty.

Hi, My name's Sergio and I have two questions for you

What happends If the AVI source has a quality of 524x400 (Lower than kvcd-3) and I use a MPGE-2 template (528x576) to convert the movie?

If this is not possible, how is the quality of the other kvcd matrix template ? You know, the one of 300x240 (more or less, I don't remeber it exactly)
Is it better than the normal VCD compression?
Does it worth the 9 hours of the process my computer needs for the conversion?

Generally it's better to use a template res under the one of the source. Here you should use 480*576. But, in your case, 528 is not so different from 524, try it and see how is the result.

The higher the resolution, the sharper is the image. And the eye is always very pleased by a sharpen image. On the opposite, the less the res, the more the image is blurred and that is really annoying to watch.

The visual quality is near the same but you will fit 2h of movie on a CD80 insteed of 80 minutes.

For sure yes ! But use the VCD resolution only in above ones don't give good results for your current job.

Simply put the fastest and most effective way to convert, AVI/Divx to KVCD is as follows: Open up avi/divx in gspot verify not so much the resolution rate, but to make sure that the audio is non-5.1, in otherwords stereo, also keep in mind the frame rate (23 or 29)

If its 5.1 then unfortunately you must use virtualdub to extract audio and convert with besweet. (I won't get into the howto's for that, because that is not the purpose of this post.)

If the audio is stereo, open up tmpgenc project wizard, then choose tmpgenc template KVCD-CQ-352x240-_NTSCFilm.mcf or plus (it really doesn't matter), the main thing is that its 354x240 so that it fits to a single (80min) cd.

On page 3 of the project wizard (for now on I will refer to project wizard as pw) click the "other settings" button, and under the "advanced" tab choose "video arrange method" full screen (keep aspect ratio). Also check to make sure under the "video" tab that the frame rate matches your avi/divx file(23 or29).

Click ok then next, on page 4 of the pw make sure your video resolution is still 354x240, hit next, on page 5 of the pw uncheck "start encoding immediately", hit ok, then select "system (video&audio) under "stream type", then browse to save to directory other then the source directory.

Depending on the speed of your pc it should take about an 1hr. One of the things that I do before I start any re-encoding is opening up my avi/divx file in powerdvd (or your favorite dvd player) so I can inspect the aspect ratio, I do this because sometimes the aspect ratio after re-encoding is to enlongated, if the aspect ratio is already 16:9 then I would select "full screen" only in tmpgenc and not "full screen (keep aspect ratio)".

This method has never failed me, whatever the quality of the avi/divx remains after re-encode to kvcd.

Note: I REALLY don't see the purpose to convert "as fast as possible" a divx into 352*240. Doing the things correctly, that is using a little of your time to understand what the REAL kvcd process is, permit to obtain a much more better result with an upper resolution.

You should better buy a Divx capable standalone, they cost nothing nowaday.

Where can I find that "Use MPA Decoder" -thing (part 3. step c. from the guide) from BeSweet GUI program? I'm using version 0.7 b4 (I think it's the latest version) so could someone tell me, where I can find that thing, what should be checked.

I encoded a KVCD yesterday (Bad Boys 2), using Virtual Dub 1.5.10
Besweet GUI 0.6 and TMPGEnc 2.510.49.157 Plus. I used the 352x240 LBR NTSC template (running time around 2h26min). I was getting an illegal MPEG audio source message, so I just used the regular TMPGEnc joiner thing. I burnt it with Nero 5.5.9.9 at 52x. It played great on my Hitachi DVD player.

However, I spent quite a few hours trying to burn other movies, but, when I get to Nero, it says it is not a VCD compatible file. That happens generally when I´m just making plain (non-K)VCDs and I mixed up the file origin and output parameters.

I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out as I´m rather lost as to what to do when I make the *m1v file (such as what template to use with what input movie format) and then when I multiplex them do I use templates for KVCD or do I use the regular templates for VCDs.

Sorry for being a damn kook, but hopefully someone will help?

Hello just wanted to say thanks for the guide here in this thread. I followed it to a "T" and except for a small glitch I was able to do a kvcd in working order and everything looked great in the end.

I stumbled on to this site when I was looking for info on this topic and man I got to say it saved me lots of headaches. I had tried many ways of convertions but nothing worked as good as this. great quality too.

KEEP UP the GREAT work and I am looking forwards on learning and sharing as I go.

Save the templates to your templates folder and then select and move ahead as per the guide.

Well, i don´t have any problem to join the mp2 and de m1v file. My steps:
1- extract the audio of the avi file with VirtualDub (mp3, 128K/s, 48KHz)-> detail: VDUB will generate a mp3 file but the extension will be xxxxx.wav. Just rename to xxxxx.mp3.
2- convert the mp3 to mp2 using CDEx.
3- join the m1v generated with tmpgenc and the mp2 generated with CDEx.
4- Record the KVCD.

ok when i get to step 4 after i set everything up to encode after i hit start nothing happens the elapsed time moves but the source postion doesnt move from 00:00:00 and the remaining time doesnt change either.. does it take a long time to start or is it just not working for some odd reason. it doesnt seem to be making the m1v file at all. does the avi being encoded divx have anything to do with it by any chance ? or would that matter. thanks for the help.

This forum is not for discussing about Divx conversion. BTW, basically ou have a problem with what is installed on your PC. Try a DVD as source, and see if things are better. Then you will know from where your problem is.

umm it was from a DVD as source the codec used to bring the dvd to avi was divx tho... i didnt download it if thats what you meant..so i should encode it dvd to mpeg1 ? then run the mpeg threw tmpg with the kvcd templete ?

No I mean that Divx are generally crappy sources, no matter how you obtained it.
No I mean that you have to use the DVD as source for makling your KVCD ! Never convert something twice ! Why encoding in mpg1 and then use the template to make it a KVCD and not using directly the KVCD template ?

While trying to convert the avi file extracted through virtualdub, tmpgenc is creating a m1v file which has the video upside down! I am using a kvcd ULBR - 352 * 240 template with CQ 60.

Any help will be appreciated...
