Let me start by saying CQMatic is great.

Now down to my question. I recently encoded a non-animated movie and got this.
Code:
CQMatic Version 1.2.00
Project: G:\Ripps\non-animated.tpr
Creating: CQMatic.tpr
G:\Ripps\Current\non-animated.m1v
Project resolution: 704x480
Execute.
Movie Time: 110
Average Bitrate: 837
Prediction Only mode
Prediction cycle #4
Final CQ value is 43.66
CQMatic complete!
Total minutes of process: 46.27
Now on an animated movie I get this.
Code:
CQMatic Version 1.2.00
Project: G:\Ripps\Current\animated.tpr
Creating: CQMatic.tpr
G:\Ripps\Current\animated.m1v
Project resolution: 704x480
Execute.
Movie Time: 101
Average Bitrate: 928
Full Encode mode
Prediction cycle #14
Final CQ value is 22.72
Encoding set to Full encode.
Full encode start...
CQMatic complete!
Why did the CQ drop so far on a shorter movie? Is there another setting that needs to be changed? I thought I read something about GOP blocks but I can not find that post again.

BTW CQMatic almost always hits the needed size. Great work kwag.

Hi incognito,

For animations or old cartoons, drop the max frames per GOP to 12 (PAL) or 15 (NTSC).

OK I changed Max frames per GOP to 15 and the CQ dropped. It's sitting at 18.67 now. What the heck could I be doing wrong?

Two things: Your project size of 704x480, and maybe your aspect
Is this a full screen movie

This is the part where you make funny sounds and faces. I'm currently doing an AVI encode. Everything from the two AVI's are the same except the first is longer. The second is shorter and I can't seem to pull the CQ up. It's a challenge now. Here's the avs if you want to see it.
Code:
######################################################################
# Based on Optimized Script to remove DCT Blocks by Girv and DialHot #
######################################################################
##############
# Parameters #
##############
#Use 720 or 352 to KDVD, 528 352 to K(S)VCD
m_width=704
#subtitle="name_of_the_subtitle.smi" # Add a # in the beginning of this line if you
#don't need subtitles.movie="name of the movie.avi"
myoverscan=1 # Test values from 0 to 3 here. Bigger files produce more quality but #a value too big will cause undesirable black borders on your TV.

##########
# script #
##########
AviSource("G:\Ripps\Current\animated_movie.avi", false)

#Post-Process
Blockbuster(method="noise",detail_min=1,detail_max=8,variance=0.3,seed=5823)
ATC(1,2,4,0.5,false)
TemporalSoften(2,7,7,3,2)
Blockbuster(method="noise",detail_min=1,detail_max=10,variance=0.5,seed=5823)

#Resize, overscan and borders

gripCrop(m_width, 480, overscan=myoverscan,source_anamorphic=false,dest_anamorphic=false)
GripSize(resizer="lanczosresize")
GripBorders()

#Subtitles #
############
#TextSub(subtitle) # Add a # in the begining of this line if you don't need subtitles.

converttoyuy2()
I read somewhere that you stopped giving advice on AVI encodes, so I understand if you pull out now. Would you like to see the tpr?

Drop lanczosresize
Use BicubicResize. That will raise your CQ a little.
And yes, I'm not giving DivX advices anymore, because 99% of the problematic posts we are receiving, are DivX related. Not to mention that some people on the net are saying that KVCD sucks, and the reality is that they were converting DivX files to KVCD, and expect great results. That's why we're going to make a new disclaimer related to DivX. To me, DivX is useless, and it just doesn't scale like MPEG-2, or even MPEG-1 on high bitrates. (DivX wasn't designed for scaling either)
However, I do give DivX the edge on extremely low bitrates. But that's about it

Thats cool, I understand. I however do not think KVCD sucks. I've done DVD and AVI conversions. Now that I know a bit about what I'm doing I think the encodes are turning out great. When you say a new disclaimer regarding DivX that doesn't mean talk of it at all will be disallowed Maybe a DivX section way at the bottom?

Hi incognito.

The problem is not (moslty!) DivX. It's the DVD->DivX->KVCD. Which is the same problem as DVD->SomeOtherLoosyFormat->KVCD.
If you go from DVD->DivX, you'll usually get pretty good quality on the DivX.
The thing is, I'm seeing too many posts daily, all related to DivX->KVCD, and I don't like it Period. People then expect quality encodes, from a third generation encode (DivX), and then they get disapointed because the quality is trashed, and they blaim KVCD. This is what I don't want to happen
So the disclaimer will clearly state that this site focuses on DVD and AVI (HuffYUV, MJPEG, etc. captures) to KVCD/KDVD. Not DivX/Xvid(MPEG-4) CODECS, which are crap, when tried to re-encode to something else.
As far as DivX support, well, anyone can talk about it. But I personally will not answer more DivX posts, and I really hope DivX topics fade away with time.

I agree with everything you said. Maybe it's my age. I for one understand that you can't encode DVD to XviD to KVCD and expect the original DVD results. I'm just thankful that there are people here who like to help and the great kwag to develop all the tools.
