Help For Optimized KVCDs
Hi All!
Yesterday I again tried to encode "The Big Lebowski" using the KVCD Template with a CQ of 74. The filesize came out 716 MB... :(( I bet you all know that sh.... I was wondering if there is a simple method to calculate the CQ you can use in company with a certain Min. and Max. Bitrate to fit a movie on one CD-R... For Example : 677 MB as .avi ---> with min. 0 max. 1450 CQ 74 ---> 716 MB as .mpg Or if there's no method why don't we just make a big LOG file online where we all post our recent encodings with the settings we used, and the filesizes of the output files... |
hi jellygoose,
Did you mean that it came out to 816mb? Because 716mb will easily fit on a cdr with room to spare! You could probably even get the 816mb to fit with overburn. That's a good idea to keep a log of the temps used and final file sizes of movies- I'll start keeping notes on that |
Unfortunately, there is no way to predict the final file size precisely ahead of time while using CQ mode. The best you can do is to encode a small portion of the movie (say, 1000-2000 frames), and then extrapolate to the final filesize from that, and adjust accordingly.

I was wondering if it is better to use a higher CQ for best quality or a higher max. Bitrate. I know you gotta compromise but what do you guys think is the better way to go?
Higher CQ with lower Max. Bitrate, or higher Max. Bitrate and lower CQ ? |

I heard about those 800 MB CD-Rs. I never tried that overburning thing... Do you think I could overburn 16 MB ?? |

This is especially interesting in the case of the KVCDx2 template, because it is already running at a very low CQ of 50, so if you are over by just a bit, bitrate is really the only thing you can change... I don't think CQs below 50 would give enough quality. |
I found reading this post very helpfull in regards to your question
