First at all, i wanna tell you that i'm from argentina, and it's such an excellent web page KVCD....
My problem is this, i don't know how to start to use the templates, i mean, i've got the TMPEGEnc but i'd really like to know how to set the options and the settings. for example: the video bitrate, GOP, quality and all that stuff.
another question is: can i add subtitles with this template, or is there another way? please let me know everything, i'm new at this, you can tell it, but please help me out with something....

Well, again, the page is excellent....

Hi johnny:

Your best place to start is at the main page here of kvcd.net. Read Sefy's guides. There's a lot of information there, on every procedure and steps to create VCD's.
You can start experimenting with the standard templates included with TMPEG, and as you move along, then start using the KVCD templates for some wild video experiences

Un saludo ,
kwag

I consider my self a newbie still, cause i 've mastered the art of making a DVD movie fit on 2 cd's that look like VHS quality, but i still haven't learned how to use the KVCD templates. I have an older computer and when I load a Regular VCD template, the movie takes around 9 hours to encode, but when i load a KVCD template, the TPMGENC says that it would take around 30 hours to encode. I didn't let it encode, but the thought of my computer running for 30 hours straight, scary. Anyway, but just like KVCDboy, i don't know how to play with the settings, is there a guide that shows the KVCD template used on a movie and explains each step and what settings to use. I know this migth be asking alot, but i'm tired of the regular VCDs. I want to know how to experiment with kvcd. Thanks

Here's something simple.
In the main window of tmpg on the lower right. There are 3 options setting, load and save. As you no doubt noticed, if you click on setting you can change a number of features which affect the way your file will be encoded. After making changes you can use the save option to save your own templates. The load option allows you to use "templates" or presets that you or someone else has made. The KVCD templates are presets that another user (Kwag) has worked very hard to set up and test to get the best results possible on 1 or 2 cd. However, some of us have trouble with our hardware not accepting certain defaults or are we are not getting the same results so we experiment and share the results. My standalone will not play KVCD at 23.97 so I changed the setting in tmpg to 29.97 after loading the KVCD template and saved it again as KVCD 1cd 29.97. You can do the same thing if you want but try loading the default templates 1st and run as is. Either use the wizard under the file menu or use the load option mentioned above.

PS: My computer is on 24hrs a day 7 days a week except when I need a fresh start to run a new app. Leave plenty of ventilation and clean the cpu and power supply fan once in a while.

thanks gll99,
I am currently expirementing on 3 templates. I put the VCD regular template and encoded only 2 mintues. I put a KVCD template and changed the setting from352x480 to 352x240 did the same 2 minutes. Then I used the KVCDx2 and also changed teh 352X480 to 352x240 adn used the same 2 minutes. They are encoding at home, and i'll check out the results tonight.
I did however have one question. When i use the Wizard on TMpg, I can only load the template but cannot change it. Why is this. The file is much bigger that the size of my disk, ( this is for the KVCD one cd method). So i loaded it without the wizard, i can change all the settings, but i cannot tell how big the file is going to be. Is there a way to find this out. Either on the wizard or without the wizard. I'm getting the hang of this encoding process, but my computer is old and takes forever to do it. That's why i ask a lot of questions, cause i want to make it right the first time.

The wizard doesn't seem to give the right file size anyway. In case you don't know this, if you want access locked features (grayed out) after you load the template, load a second template called unlock from the extra folder. File size even for the tested templates is still a bit trial and error because high motion will increase the size of a CQ encoded movie because of the min and max bitrate setting. On the other hand a low motion film may allow you to increase min/max or CQ % and still maintain the same size. It is easier to consistently predict file size with a constant bitrate but then you will not get the flexibility of a variable bitrate. Before you go through the same trial and error read the posts. A lot is covered on the advantages and disadvantages of changing certain parms. A few posts mention the impact of changes on file size.

I encode at least 10 to 15 min to get a feel for what the size will be. I find 2 min can be deceiving depending on what part of the movie you select.
Keep in mind too that the same movie encoded full size as opposed to wide screen (black strip at top and bottom) will be much larger possibly as much as 30% or more.

I read somewhere (could have been here) that with tmpg, if you fill the 2 black bars by adding a black mask on a wide screen movie and will take less space and be true black with no encoder color bleeding causing blocks because the encoder wont waste time with impurities in those bands. That seems to make sense but I have not tested it.

Never be shy about asking questions. We are all experimenting and learning. Post your results so we can all benefit but be specific. Keep track of all the settings that deviate from the standard KVCD templates. Then you need only identify the template (1 or 2 cd), your changes and the results.
