Also how long would it take and how much space would I need for the new converted files, and would the audio/visual quality be terrible afterwoods? Can I do it on a ordinary cd burner using nero as I don't have a dvd burner.

Anytime you convert from say an rm file, real media, it is already compress, and there will be quality loss.
A DaT file is an mpg file with vcd headers, etc... and can easily be transfered back to regular mpg.
Tmpgenc can handle a wide range or formats, or other helper tools (i.e. bink smack, etc). Space would be about the same on your hd.
Will burn the same as a regular kvcd.
One of the formats I've seen which convert very nicely are .qt/.mov files.
I.E. movie trailers in quicktime format (
http://www.apple.com/trailers/)
as they are in very good quality to begin with.
