Hello all:

OK, OK do not hit me for opening a new topic here. I just started this thread to separate the posts between Dvix issues and KDVD. If I am wrong, please tell me and we will stop this thread and wil post on "Guide: DVD/DivX to KDVD/K(S)VCD using CCE/TMpgEnc 2.00."

This is a good news post because I was able to back up three dvds in one dvd, but with a twist.

Anyway, it appears that I did not follow the directions properly, and the encoding of the three movies was a bit larger in Bw than expected, and by the time I added the AC3 files, I ended up with a 4775 Mb file. This after editing all three files with Tmpegenc dvd author. But, and this is the twist, I used dvd2one to transcode it to 4438Mb. The only problem here is that I have no control whatsoever of the chapters, everything appeared as one movie, which is how I used dvd2one.
I wanted to check two things
1.- The quality of the movie, which is very good. (I am using the MA script posted in the guide -version 1.91- and
2.- See if dvd2one or dvdshrink would reduce the size of the file in order for it to fit in one dvd. (Actually, I wanted to use dvdshrink, but it does not want to open the video files. I need to use Ifo and restructure the video, otherwise dvdshrink will not run at all, it keeps on telling me that I am missing a video_ts file, or something like that. I forgot, this was late last night and I was sleepy)

I was sopposed to finish this yesterday, but two of the files that I was trying to back up, had AC3 problems (Corrupted audio in frames.......) and after reading several posts, I managed to find the ones talking about AC3fix. This program corrected the corrupted frames, and was able to create the needed mp2 audio files..........( I need to thank all of the folks that posted suggestion on how to resolve AC3's corrupted audio)

That is all I have, other than to experiment a bit more w/dvdshrink, which may give me the ability to choose between films....)

Regards

Hi all:

I learned that one of the reasons why I had no control on the movies was that I placed the files in the clip section of dvdauthor, and not in the track section, as I should have done. Unfortunately, the trial time has expired and now I have to download the new version, or perhaps the one that was working for me, if I can still find it...........
Have downloaded the new version and it is a bit different than the previous one. I am receiving GOP error messages, (not received on the previous version), which I ignored, and now it is compiling the dvds.......will report on my results tomorrow......

Regards

Otto

Just for your info: Placing the files within the clip version saves at least 400 Mb. This confirms what vmesquita was talking about regarding the Bw that authoring requires.

Well, I did not have to wait until tomorrow. I am receiving another error, and this one is stating that I have an "Illegal Dolby Digital (AC3) stream, and it stop authoring........... The previous DVD Author version did not give me this message at all. Any ideas???

Otto,

Some authoring app don't like a GOP of 15, used to get more compression and perfectly compiland according to Kwag (in fact you could go up to 18 in NTSC if CCE allowed). Since you're using the Trial of DVD Author anyway, why not download the Trial of DVDLab? It's also a cheap authoring app, 79 bucks... And it's the best in my oppinion, the only flaw is that it doesn't directly support swichable subtiltes.

i didn't understand this:

Could you explain it in a better way?

Could you give me the final filesizes you got for the movies and the soundtrack? Using DVDShrink and DVD2One is a resort, but should not be used unless there's any other way. Any of this transcoder give less quality than encoding at a lower bitrate, specially if bitrate is scarce (which is the case)

You can transcode audio to AC3 using the free app AC3Machine. (just make sure you don't have a LG or Pioneer player). Corrupt frames problem is wired, I never had this problem with DVDs, and only once it happend with a DivX with AC3 audio.

Sorry for the loose explanation of this, but basically what I was saying is that dvdauthor has two places where you can add files: The Tittle area, and the chapter area. Originally, I was placing the files in the chapter area, under one tittle file, and the software treated all three movies as chapters, this was the reason why I was not able to switch between tittles, I only had one tittle, which is not what I wanted to have. What I was also stating is that if I place the files as chapter, then the final dvd size was smaller than when I loaded the files as tittles. (But today I am not sure if this is true, I will do more experimenting regarding this and will post the results later on) Is this making more sense?

Presently I have one issue that I am trying to resolve:
One of the dvds being backed up is the Matrix, and what I see on the screen is the same scene repeated 3 or 4 times. This is an angle issue, and I am trying to find out where I can control which angle to view, and to the best of my knowledge, this is not a dvd player issue, so I need to learn if this is a decrypter, dvd2avi or an encoding issue. (It sounds like a dvd2avi issue, but I am not sure about it. I have not search this at all) Could this be resolved by changing the script to see only angle 1?

Any suggestions here will be appreciated. Better yet, if someone has resolved this issue, please post such solution in the "KVCD Questions and Answers, links to Problems and Solutions in the Forum."

Thanks and best regards

Totonho03,

Now I understood. Since I don't have DVD Author, I didn't know this stuff.

About "The Matrix":
I had the same problem when doing my backup of this movie. The solution is put DVD Decrypter to rip only one angle. You can do that by going on menu Tools/Settings, and clicking on the TAB File Mode. Check MultiAngle Processing and change "Retain Angle...in vobs" to 1. Now it should work.

Good morning to you all:

Well, after a lot of work, experimenting and troubleshooting, I can now say that I have a KDVD, with 3 films. Basic, The Matrix and TLOR 2T. It is more than 6 hours of film, and the pictures are good, with a couple of exceptions on some scenes. I used a Q of 40 for basic, 35 for The Matrix, and 32 for TLOR, and looking at the quality of the films, 40 will be tha Max (or minimum) Q that I will use.
In creating this kdvd I used:
* Vmesquita's guide v. 191 with their recommended software
* MA script, as defined in the guide and previous posts.
* Tmpgenc DVD author
* Virtualdubmode, to resolve script issues that I had
* AC3 fix to resolve corrupted frames

Problems seeing:
1.- Did not used the prediction guidance properly. The consequence of this was that the Bw was higher than 4.4 Gb (about 4.9 G.b). This after encoding all movies more than once, a time consuming function. With my equipment, the encoding function took anywhere from 5 hours, for basic, to more than 7 hours for TLOR.
Solutions.- In my case, I used:
A) dvd2one. Picture quality was good, did not see the effects of transcoding. (Going from 4.9 to 4.4 does not require too much compression)
B).- Reducing the audio bit rates to 128 kbps, and
C).- Usig the edit functions of DVD author and deleting unneded frames at the beginning and the end of the films. All of these steps reduced the Bw to 4.4+ Gb

2.- Video issues (please remember that I was looking for problems here):
* In some dark scenes I was able to see pixelation, particularly in the film encoded with a Q of 40.
* In the film encoded with a CQ of 35 I was detecting some color issues, for esample:
* The color of lips of "The One" appear to be bleeding, meaning that I was seeing a "ghost", but of the color red only.
* In scenes where there was a green wall, the green color, on a portion of the wall, appear to be oversaturated.
* In a red chair, the color looked faded but only in portions of the chair. I can not detect these problems in the original DVD.

As I mentioned earlier, overall, the quality was good.

Thank you vmesquita, kwag, jorel and many other for your help and guidance.

@Totonho03

The problem is that you had to transcode using DVD2One. Transcoding is always worse than encoding, and in this case where we're pushing the bitrate to the max, it is even worse. I belive that using no transcoder, the quality would be much better, but on the other hand it is very annoying to reencode stuff more than once.

Hi vmesquita:

Sorry for not explaining this properly. Yes, my first solution was the use of dvd2one, but then I reduced the bw with the steps mentioned, and I created the kdvd without dvd2one, that is directly from dvd author to Nero. The color problems and pixelation mentioned, are not dvd2one related.

Thanks
