I am really having problems with the dvd templates. Every movie I have managed to burn to dvd has either ended up as full screen or the audio is way out with the kdvd templates. I tried one of the standard dvd templates that came with tempgenc and the movie turned out great. I know that my dvd player is compatable( a cyberhome 528 plays anything). Is the 720 x 480 nessasary or can this be altered the same way as the kvcd templates, to say 352x288? or is this not compatable with dvd players? I have left the aspect ratio at default(16:9 NTSC- 4:3 PAL) so where am I going wrong?

Hi 8210:

I can't see how it's possible that the standard DVD template came out ok and the KDVD template not. They both create standard DVD compliant mpeg files! The KDVD is as compatible as the standard DVD templates included with TMPEG. The templates have nothin to do with audio/video sync.
What program are you using to burn your mpeg files to DVD(+-)R ?

@bud
Are you around here? Bud has created many DVD's ( more than me ) with the KDVD template. If he doesn't read this post, try to send him a PM about this subject.

Hi Kwag, I got some information from Bud last night. I am using a Pioneer DVR104 which seems to get a good write up but is giving me a lot of nice new shiny coasters . I am using ulead dvd movie factory which seems to be pretty straight forward, although maybe i am missing something. I am now onto my third brand of discs to see if my problems are media related and so far so good on the burn of The Rock which is near completion using datasafe Re writables. What I need to know is if it is possible to alter the template to say 352x288? The reason I ask is that when I was creating vcd's out of downloads the quality was great at that setting and seemed to help with the filesize as downloaded movies seemed to be a bit eratic when it came to guestimating the final size.

Hi 8210:

Yes. You can use 352x288 for DVD's too. But the audio has to be 48Khz.
So the easiest thing you can do is just change the output resolution on the 352x576 Half D1 template to 352x288. Everything else should stay the same. It should burn as a DVD compliant file, because 352x288 is also an MPEG-2 DVD standard resolution.

I use the KDVD Half templates on all my encoding without any problems. No changes are required. The ending file size is around 1.3 GB or so for a 90-100 min movie. I then use DVDiT to author. I build the menus, add the movies, let DVDiT do it's thing, burn. The only change I make to the DIDiT is the audio as suggested by Kwag, change to 192, Dolby Digital which creates a small file, I have been able to get as many as three movies on one DVD-R, depending on the movie, my wife likes the Kung Fu type movie, I just did Fist of Legend 103 Min, Jackie Chan's First Strike 88 Min and Return of the Dragon 90 Min on the same DVD-R. Almost forgot one other change is to set DVDiT for 16:9 Widescreen, because the first KDVD templates I had were set for 16:9, but DVDiT will correct for the standard screen also. Played back the DVD-R on a Pioneer DV 343, Panasonic LV55, Panasonic E20, Samsung M301 without any problems. About the only thing I can suggest is just keep trying, I do play back all the encoded movies with WinDVD rpior to buring so I can be sure the audio and video are in sync. Use what's works for your system, burner, players, yours may not wark as mine did, but at some point it WILL WORK.

Aloha
Bud

Arhh! I used the half d1 template at 352x288 but when i go to burn an error appears saying the video resolution is not supported, I dont see why because everything else was left at default including the audio (48000)

Thanks Bud, I have managed to get a movie to work with menus and chapters. My new problem is with the aspect ratio being wrong. I encode the movie with the template as is but change the audio to dual channel instead of stereo because it works better with my surround sound. I encoded a Pal movie with the template automatically set at 4:3 which when its finished I check it in power dvdXP which looks great but when I burn it and play it on my dvd the movie is nearly but not quite full screen instead of 4:3. Even if I adjust my tv to 4:3 because the movie is nearly full screen I end up with two shades of black then the movie which kinda wastes it after the amount of time it takes to get it there. Although the picture quality becomes really good when I put my tv to 4:3, which is why I was asking about encoding at 352x288 but ulead dvd movie factory says that it is not a compliant size for dvd and wont let me burn it.

There is a patch available for DVD Movie factory as the version shipped with most DVD R/RW (- or +) has a known audio sync problem.

You can download it from their site @ this link.

Hope it helps

I've just finished encoding Domestic disturbance which i'm glad to say is absolutely perfect! I used the KDVD Full NTSC template as is, apart from setting the audio to dual channel. The final size is 1,355,679 which will allow me to easily fit three movies to 1 dvdr at good quality The only problems I am still having are with the Pal templates. If anyone has managed to encode with good quality and a correct aspect ratio could you p.m me or leave a reply, as I honestly have no idea where i'm going wrong especialy now that i have great results with ntsc. An update on video resolutions - Ulead dvd movie factory will not allow mpegs encoded at 352x288 although it is a valid ntsc resolution used for dvd, vcd's and vhs
