ffmpeg compiled for Windows!

This was my assignment today, to compile ffmpeg to run under Windows.
And here you have it
http://www.kvcd.net/ffmpeg_win.zip
You also need this:
http://www.kvcd.net/libz.zip

This is version 0.4.7.
Compiled with MinGW/MSYS, and working here perfectly :!:
Please remember that all the bugs and qwirks that exist on the U*IX version are also present here.
This is only a recompile of the source tree, to work under Windows. Currently tested under Windows XP Professional.
Please lete me know if you have any problems ( missing libs, etc ).
For documentation, please see here: http://ffmpeg.sourceforge.net/ffmpeg-doc.html

So what's the next step: ffmpeg in CQMatic
We'll see (probably yes!)

Hey Kwag

I am absolutely clueless but i thought i would download this jsut to see and i get running windowns ME

Quote:

A required .DLL file,LIBZ.DLL was not found
Not even sure what this progrqam does  ,didn't follow the threads to close because i have enough trouble following windows

kwag 09-09-2003 07:31 PM

Hi bigggt,

Thanks for the feedback.
I just got the same error on my wife's machine ( XP Prof. )
But on my machine, it runs fine.
Let me look for that .dll, and if it's the only one needed, I'll upload it in a little while.
I'll then re-zip the file with the needed .DLLs.

I just edited the first post on this thread, with the link to libz.dll.
I found the missing file in my c:\windows\system32\libz.dll
No need to put it there. You can put it on the same directory where you have the ffmpeg.exe file.

Senor Kwag:

I think that ESP is indeed a fact (But this is long distance ESP) I was going to ask you today a couple of questiosn regarding ffmpeg for windows, and when I open the forum (I was watching the democratic debacle, I mean debate on TV), there it was, did not even have to ask the question, and the answer was there :D

I am presently backing up a film on my laptop, and as soon as it finishes it I will play a little with this new method of backing up....Maybe I should wait for CQmatic eh? :)

Thanks a lot, and brace yourself for lady Isabel!!!!!!

Hi Otto,

No, don't wait :!:
ffmpeg is still VERY buggy, and until it's further debugged, it's really a "play" encoder.
When I see all the mux errors and other glitches dissapear, then I'll integrate it into CQMatic. That will take me just a few hours

Hello all:

This will show my ignorance when it comes to linux OS. In my laptop, I have created a partition which I am not presently using. Is it possible to work with Linux within such partition? And if yes, what advantages would I gain over the ffmpeg for windows? The size of it is about 6 Gigas.

Thanks and regards

Hi Totonho,

You would gain speed, and that's about it.
There's not much more you can do with ffmpeg in Windows or Linux.
On MAC OS X, that's a different story, because you have ffmpegX (Front end) so you don't have to resort to the command line to encode :)

Hi totonho,
Yes it would be possible to run Linux from that partition but be advised that Linux is not a very friendly OS. Even working in the Windows-like graphical environment you will feel a bit lost and alone.
But there is nothing like giving it a shot right?
Try Suse or Red Hat distributions since these are the most updated ones.
There's also Mandrake which is like Red Hat but maybe more friendly.
Make sure you buy a good book about Linux or else it will be very disapointing.

Cheers

Thank you guys for your answers.

I would like to be more familiar w/ffmpeg in windows, and then later on experiment with linux, or perhaps even (I am trembling here) Apple's OS

If oyu don't want to get involved in installing, you can google 4 knoppix, it runs from cd, so it's not the fastest, but it does a great job and has a lot of software.

totonho03 09-13-2003 10:35 AM

Hi japie:

I have tried downloading it, but it says it will take about 50 hours to d/load. I will wait try again later.
Thanks for the site

Thank you kwag, it was a heck of a lot faster. Only 1.25 hours instead of 48 hours :D

Hey Kwag, did I miss something? I downloaded the file at the top of the thread with the required dll and when I execute the program all I get is a black screen that flashes for a second and looks like it dumps some files! Do I need another program or something? Like to give it a try if it is faster then Tmpgenc!!
