Correct settings for KVCD with ffmpegX?

What are the optimum settings for kvcd with ffmpegX. I would like to fit as much good quality video on a CD-R as possible.

I have tried the auto settings, but the bitrate always turns red when i set the number of minutes I want to encode (currently this is 78 minutes)

Any suggestions please?

You can store on a 700MB CDR media about:

VCD Preset: 80 min of video at near-VHS quality
CVD Preset: 52 min of video at near-SVHS quality
SVCD Preset: 45 min of video at near-DVD quality
KSVCD Preset: 63 min of video at near-SVCD quality
KVCD Preset: 108 min of video at near-VCD quality

You can store on a 4GB DVD media about:
DVD-hi Preset: 145 minutes of video at DVD quality
DVD-lo Preset: 4 hours and 10 min of video at near SVCD quality
KDVD Preset: 5 hours of video at near SVCD quality

The bitrate coloring currently assumes normal Q Matrix is always used, so you can ignore it for KVCD.

I have been experimenting with KvCD since I have seen the outright benefits minus all the re-encoding nightmare and disk-space needed for DVD, etc. etc. etc.

My question is this: Audio Bitrate seems to always stay at 224 using "kvcd preset"...

From what I read, KvCD is 128...

Anyone clarify this please..

You can actually use any bitrate you want as long as it is in the range.
448,384,256,224,192,160,128,96,etc...
Maybe I'm skipping some available bitrate but these are the most common.
Please bare in mind that if you want to go below 192kbit you should use MP2 (Mpeg1-Layer2) instead of A52 (AC3).
Unless if you are reencoding in AC3 2.0 or 2.1, there you might want to go as low as 128 or even 96.
Also please bare in mind that no matter if you are encoding KVCD or KDVD you can use MP2 or AC3.
It is your choice!
We usually go with MP2 on small media or when you have a big media as a DVD-R but you want multiple titles in it.
If you are only encoding 1 movie and it comes in AC3 I don't see why you would want to reencode the audio.
Leave it as it comes and burn it on a DVD-/+R.
But if you want to burn it on a CD-R then you might want to reencode the audio to MP2@128 or 160 so that you keep enough room for the video part of it.
Cheers

Forget the presets.
Presets -> That's exactly what KVCD/KDVD are NOT.
KVCD/KDVD are small deviations from the video industry standards to achieve better visual results.
And most of the magic is actually behind the Matrix we use, that is The Notch.
To help newbies Karl and the guys built a couple of Tmpgenc templates that already come with The Notch and with the rest of the "presets" but you can always tweak it as much as it pleases you.

Short answer: it is not, it is what you prefer.
For KVCD I have always prefered 160Kbit ;).
